Projects JACK ASS BUYERS. ..Another disapointing day spent with a "builder" Lol

Discussion in 'The Hokey Ass Message Board' started by Kellys Hot Rod Parts, Jan 12, 2014.

  1. Another perfect Sunday..Last Sunday I spent 3 hrs in -30 weather with this guy on my 47 convert. I then excepted his offer($2000 less than my asking price), he shakes my hand and gives me a small cash down payment(500)... Now this Sunday1/12 I get to spend another 3 hrs with him but at least its 20 degrees.. Then he tells me he changed his mind because the build will cost another 25,000 although he claims he builds his own cars and he would like his deposit back...He got 1/2 and I got pissed....Oh and on top of it My Wife Jeanne with the brain tumor got to watch his naughty grand kids...perfect.........Nearly 60 and Im still learning..I guess a handshake really doesn't mean to much now days...

Some people never cease to amaze me. When you are in business, you see it all but there's always more no matter how much you've seen. This guy sounds like a class, A prick. I think you actually got lucky. It cost you a few hours of time and some frustration on your wife's part but if this is how he does business, who knows what other BS he might have pulled?? Let him take his shit somewhere else.

  6. 3 hrs of measuring this and picking at that...He claimed to be a builder but couldn't figure out how to take off the door hinges....I felt sorry for his 40 something son.. he spent most the morning looking at the floor...I knew something was up when he called Saturday and said to my wife this is N*** I'm the guy that's supposed to buy your husbands car...She told me so!! Then I got to listen to my wifes I TOLD YOU NOT TO TRUST THAT GUY!! and damn she was right................He actually had the balls to say that's the way the car hobby is sometimes you win sometimes you lose.....and you can buy a nice 47-48 Ford convert finished for 35,000 because the markets flat....In who's F'n world is this guy livin...........

I might be wrong, but I thought the reason for a deposit was to guarantee the seller wouldn't sell it to someone else, and the buyer would come thru with the rest of the money. You lived up to your end of the deal, he didn't. He loses his deposit. You are a far more forgiving guy than I. Buisiness is buisiness, you may have missed an opportunity to sell it to a real buyer while you held it for this jerk. That should be his loss, not yours.

geez, what foul word doesn't fit this situation? have had people swear on their Mother's grave that they will buy a car I had For Sale - promises, promises. learned early on about taking a check deposit for a 24hr hold - just canceled check. last car guy flew from another State to buy my car - continually bitched and pressed for me to lower price. but, he had already lined up a buddy that has a shop to do ton of finish work plus, bragged about owning this'n'that. he had already given me the cashier's check , which I cashed immediately and no lowering of price. I was stuck with him for 3 days. then he left and kept promising that some transport company was going to pick up car. finally told him to get it moved or I would have it towed and put in storage some place. car left quickly. but, he did steal some small parts and memorabilia from my shop, including a H.A.M.B. sticker. still hate thinking about that deal.

what a jerk--nothing surprises me anymore---people are not good for their word. You went way out of your way by giving back what you did. As others have said, spend it on your wife.

Don't take deposits , only full payment in cash. It's the only way it should be done, cash talks-bullshit walks, we all know ! Sorry to hear he wasted 6 hrs. Of your life that u will never get back !

  22. Sorry about your wife

If you decide to take a deposit - consider an express (written)
Bill of Sale at the time of deposit stating no refunds are to be given.

A good Bill of Sale contains:

    Description
    Condition
    Warranty
    Refund Policy
    Sale Price
    Method of Payment
    Timetable of Payment(s)

You forgot to subtract his ailing wife's day care services.

I figure that 3 hours is too long to look over anything...flag. And the bragging tells me, "big mouth small brain" syndrome is at work...flag. And being pushy on lowering the price...even after you said "no"...flag. Bringing his grandkids at all...flag. Etc, etc, etc. And I bet there were others you're not even mentioning.

But it's easy for me to say...especially after the fact. I know how it is. You're wantin' to sell somethig, so you're willing to put up with one bit of inconveniance...then another...then another. And they start adding up fast...lol. It's hard to judge the lay-of-the-land sometimes. It's like trying to drive thru a mud-hole that keeps gettin' deeper and deeper...and rather than stop and back out, you just keep on going to see if you can make it through...and then you get stuck. But jeez...ya try not to be an old curmudgeon like my wife says I'm becoming...lol. Ya wanna be a nice guy...'cause the hobby's supposed to be fun...and we're all "car-guy buddies", right?

One thing I've found to be generally true. When "Mr. Right" comes along, things go smoooooth...like butta. There's a mutual respect,...no surprises, no assumptions, there's an effort to be amiable with no undue pressure or "yakityyak" bullshit. And it really is an enjoyable experience...from start to finish. (whether a deal is made or not)

It's always a bit of a risk, but I swear...sometimes I think I'm gonna start having them pay just to enter my fkn driveway. :D

Better luck next time, Kelly. Hopefully, Mr. Right shows up soon.

Btw...it cracks me up that the guy is such an "authority" on the market, yet he didn't know what it would cost him to build the car before he paid you the deposit?...duh. His wife probably found out what he was doing and layed down the law...lol. Dorkhead.

I'd have kept the $500 and told him to take a hike. At least you got the $250 for your trouble. I see a good night out for you & the missus, on him.

  27. I've gone through the promises a million times, especially dealing with craigslist flakes. I swear, sometimes it seems as if every single buyer out there claims to be a "certified expert" who happens to have zero money!

I had a guy come over once to look at a truck i was selling. He stands their telling me stories for about 1/2 hr then he starts to run down the truck for another 1/2 hr. As if that wasnt annoying enough he then pulls out the dipstick and smells it? he then tells me my # 3 bearing is fried(his words). At that point I shut the hood, the door and started walking towards my house thinking what the hell is wrong with people ):

Im pretty sure even if you have it written and signed by both parties that their is no refund on the deposit you still have to give it back when push comes to shove. Something about no transfer of goods??

either way half is better than nothing..
Sorry to hear about your wife, hope everything will be ok.

When we (my dad and I) went to go look at the 40 coupe in my avitar we spent about an hour looking at it at the most, it was an immediate "buy it" hand shake agreement on price and no money down. But it was a friends of his old car that had passed and his wife who was selling the car knew my dad for years.
When I went to go look at the vickey, my first thoughts were to pass on it. The seller told me that when I came back I would be pulling a trailer with me. I thought to my self "yea right"....A week later and I was back with a trailer. Go figure ???
