I realize that. It's a drag link just the same weather it has an idler and tie rods or it just connects from the pitman to the opposing side at the steering arm. It's the idea of making one that work's for you.

Sort of...but not quite. with a drag link, if there's a bend in it to clear something, it may or may not clear as the link can rotate. With an idler and center link, the idler keeps the center link from rotating.

No doubt having the tube straight like that give most stiffnes
but its better to have a bend in that tube if you crash
it helps to soften the inpact and work a bit like a crumplezone

I have nothing to add at this point other than I think this body style rules as a street/strip machine.

Thanks for taking the time to post.

Even a jump hope can't rotate with out help. So don't help it, combat it. It's all in the engineering.

Yup....and one of these days I'll get some parts in the mail, and figure out how to make it work, one way or another. I did find a longer tie rod end to use at the pitman arm end, which will let me put a bend in it. But I don't like that solution.

I got some drag link parts in the mail, did a little assembly and measuring, looks like the link is probably going to clear the notch in the oil pan OK. Won't know for sure till the car is put together more....I need to put the "real" engine in it for that, which will be a little while till it happens.

I got my rearend, which was hiding under my 57 suburban....getting ready to tack perches on it, and see how it fits. 57 ford wagon, with aftermarket axles with chevy bolt pattern, and Chevy 11 x 2" drum brakes. I'll swipe the 3.25 locker out of the 55 to go in this rear. Final gear ratio selection will happen when I get the car to the strip.

Can you set the engine back a bit to help with steering clearance and weight distribution?

The engine is set back as far as it can go without whacking the firewall, which I don't want to do. And I"m moving the rear end forward 9" to seriously alter the weight distribution.

The piece that came out will go back in. In a slightly different position.

I like what you're doing. Reminds me of what I was cutting up on my Chevy II a few years ago.

Beautiful, if that was a Ohio car the picture would be of a shovel full of rust

Love the build, here's how to do a 64 Fairlane to help others visualize what is happening.

There are lots of ways to do this job, we're doing it kind of strangely to deal with the rust and collision damage on the car. It was destined for the scrap heap....in AZ, this car is a real piece of crap.

Almost ready to put the floor back in. Got some bodywork done on the quarters, cleaned up the floor section, trimmed more excess stuff from around the trunk area.

Also got some parts in the mail, including the roll cage and seats.

What are those seats you went with? They look great!
I've been looking at the Limeworks seats, and their diamond tuck pattern looks pretty good.Im eager to see what you have in mind for covers.

The seats are from Speedway, they're called "sportsman seats" or something. 5 lbs each. They are more square looking than the 1960s buckets, but they'll work ok. They sell square tuft seat covers, I'd like to do diamond tuft.

They look pretty close to old seats.Lots closer than a shiny aluminum high back Kirkey seat for sure....
Nice job so far. That car is gonna be a really big deal when the dust settles.
