Hey guys, anyone know any good salvage yards left with some old iron in it within 150 miles of Springfield, Mo? Some place that will let you look around and you won't have to leave a nut and a paycheck when you leave? Anywhere in northeastern Oklahoma, Northern Arkansas, or Southeast Kansas would be in that search area. Thanks.

A couple miles east of Baxter Springs on 166/400 on the north side of the hiway. It's the last west bound exit off I-44 in Missouri headed north. Couple miles north then west on 166/400. You can't miss it. He'll let you walk all over the place.

    Glen,
I have driven by your uncle's hundreds of times but never stopped, you know anything more about the place. I would actually like to stop and check it out soon.

My dad is from Cabool :) I've got a cousin that still lives there.

  8. Is that the one that used to be scattered out for a long way along US 60? There was a huge one down there but for the past few years I haven't been able to see it from the highway. The one I'm talking about must have went for a mile all up on those hills there on the south side of the highway..

  9. There is one out side of Humansville Mo. Roy Scott but his son likes to crush em! $$$ we use to buy by the pound still alot of vintage tin there Also check with whiskey runner he has alot of 50 &60s RC 417-273-2261

I have not been there since the 90's I left Oklahoma in 91. Glad to hear positive things about him. I know his two sons help run the show. I had planned to visit last year on Sunday after the HAMB drags but it was so hot and humid I just wanted to get out of Missouri.
Take a look at that google map and zoom in, it looks pretty amazing from my view.

Yes based on the map and from what I have seen driving by we are all talking about the same place. There is an exist ramp for 60 and 63 there right now so it is difficult to see the place if you are driving along 60, but it you are exiting 63 onto 60 you can see it. Looks like lots of vintage in there.

About 15 years ago my job took me to Amsterdam Mo. south of KC East of hwy 69.
There was a great grove of cars somewhere close to 71. Maybe Archie or Adrian?? lots of cars. I've often wondered if they are still there.

I've been to Johns in Cabool Mo also and bought a few things. Havn't been there for a few years now but I drive past it occasionally. Yes it is on the south side of Hwy 60 and can be seen easily if your headed west. You'll miss it if your headed east. Lots of old cars and lots of hills, not a trek if you have medical issues, just so you know. Great people there.

stuff when the price was up, won't let you in just to look, and want a arm and a leg for worn out stuff. stutsmans south of ozark on 65 is still pretty good. what are you looking for? are you just wanting to look for fun. i saw a private place hour and half east of spfd a couple of months ago. the owner had his head up his butt and couldn't even find what he said he had after i made the drive.

This one is interesting: according to Google Earth, it was 97% empty in 1991 tho the roads were there :

... but by '02 it was full again. Usually {sigh} it works the other way around. Crush out in the '90s ??

Man, I can't believe how many times I have driven by that yard in Cabool.

Literally hundreds of times in the last two years. Had a project I was overseeing in West Plains MO, and I had to drive by that place twice a trip.

Always meant to go see the few "show cards" he had up near the road, thinking that was all he had, but never made it.

Now I'll be going for sure when the weather turns nice.

I'll be packing a lunch, and two gallons of water too. ;)

Well, I am looking for stuff. I build my kids period correct pull wagons, I've got a 23' T bucket pull wagon, sportin a fake flattie and white walls now. I'm building a 47' Ford Truck Rat Rod now for all 3 kids, but I've got a big shop with no projects for daddy. I'd like to find a late 30's to late 40's ford truck to rat out also. So I'm really just looking for about anything I can find right now. I really appreciate the info on all these salvage yards, never coulda ran these down on my own.

Yeah, I believe I saw the auctions on both of those, I couldn't make it due to work. I believe I know where they both ended up though, there is a guy in the middle of Hurley ( just north of me) who has an early 50's truck now, and has a bunch of old A's and T's and parts sitting around. I don't think he sells them though, guess I need to stop by and see where he comes up with this stuff.

Schollmeyer's in Chamois,MO still has a lot of good stuff. He will let you walk around the yard too. Mostly 50-60's stuff but there is a good amount of 40's. Bring your hiking boots.

    Bump!

John Coddington's in Cabool, MO really IS the stuff. I visited last spring, walked for more than 4 hours, moving quickly, and still didn't see it all!

Like other midwestern rural salvage yards, rust can indeed be a big problem, but there are still plenty of trim parts, glass, and yes, still good body panels to be found there.

Fantastic stuff that's tough to find anywhere else. Tons of '59-'64 Chevy, rows of tail-finned Mopars, a few Packards, and supposedly a whole section of 40s cars that I missed.

Here are just a few of the many, many pictures I took there in March 2010:

Also worth visiting is Huxel's Salvage in Union, MO, about 50 miles southwest of St. Louis. It's much smaller than Coddington's, but then so are most salvage yards.

Bill Huxel makes good use of the space he has though, almost all vintage, only a few post 1985 cars in the whole place. Many are rough as hell, but not picked too clean, still plenty of good stuff to be had. He's even got tri-5 Chevys, other '50s cars, a decent amount of '58-'64 Chevy, lots of other GM, but a few stray Fords and Mopars too.

He'll let you walk, but call him first to make sure he's there. I haven't talked to him recently, so I'm not going to post his phone number here, but it can be found on Google.

  28. Should be a couple left up around Camdenton or Lebanon.
You'll need to make friends with one of the locals to find 'em.

Probably too far away, but there should be a big one around Calwood, MO.

It is probably the one around Fulton, MO.
