Event Coverage The Official 2014 Meltdown Drags #5 thread, vintage drag meet, July 18,19&20 Byron IL

Discussion in 'The Hokey Ass Message Board' started by David Doo, Jan 3, 2014.

  1. I love the scene where Warren Oats gets into the 55 with Taylor, and they race Wilson and the chick in the GTO. As they pull away from the GTO, (with the weak sister LS5 camera car) Warren is looking out the side window yelling " "come on man" to Wilson. Then he turns around, braces himself while saying "whooa shiiit! What are you trying to do man!? Blow my mind!" My brother Marc and I say that to each other, when we're making thrash p***es in our cars together

  2. If I remember correctly, they were at Bee Line filming some race scenes as they headed east filming the movie. While they were at the track, the director saw a couple of dudes take out there own trans, and and make some, clutch adjustment etc. in about 30 minutes. He asked them if they'd come along and maintain the cars during the rest of the shoot which they did (they were paid too). It was probably one of them doing the "big boy driving" (anyone know who these guys were/are). I've never heard him talk about it, but I'll have to ask **** Jones if he was driving in the opening scene here in LA. If you listen, you'll hear a little clutch slip after the shifts from the old L88 clutch kit.

  3. That is funny about the different driver...

It reminds me of 25 years ago when we used to pick on this other guy who thought he could really drive his souped up Nova.... "Know how to shave off a half second? Its easy. Really easy. Easiest part to install... Doesn't cost much either... Change the driver!" Ahh, good times.

Put me down for $100 towards the Gene Cromer drag racing fund. I sure wish I could be there.

Ric, I believe one of the mechanics that traipsed across the country with them was Jay Wheatley and the other was possibly his brother....

We're up to $550 pledged (and counting)... how do we collect ? And even more important, how do we get Gene to accept without offending him ?

In my opinion this is all out of respect for the man and the history of his racing and the car itself... and, of course... the need to see history in motion. The Meltdown event seems to have a marque car every year in attendance...this one, and the man, certainly qualifies.

I play the Greer video over and over...watching Gene kick Quain's **** just doesn't get old... :D

I think Quain should be getting a little boost for helping Gene get out there too.
That guy just never seems to stop helping people.
I'm pretty sure that Ol Boy's Mama never taught him how to say "No" when he was a kid...:)

He did kick my **** but keep in mind he will be on my side at the meltdowns. As for the money I think someone is working on that now and I have another $50 through a private message also, so that's $600 total.

Thank's power shift, I get my boost every time I see Gene and his family look at the Moonlighter and smile I have even seen a few tears from time to time. And your right not saying no has got me into a few messes before but I'll never learn.

I believe Eric is working, as we speak, on setting up a way to do the donations safely. I'm sure he will be posting something very soon.

  14. I checked it out, cool info, thanks Brent. As a kid, I had heard the road runner story several times from dad, but it ended with beating the road runner. When we
bought, Yesterdays Child (hoping it was the old PC&J car, I called Ricard to ask some questions. He said he hadn't done any work on the 56, its straight axle treatment was done by a friend of dad and Jonesy's named John Ward, who also used a Renualt rack n pinion on it, and **** Jones confirmed that info two weekends ago (how about that ole brother Quain).I had had confused the 56, with the Camaro ("Fat Rat") that Richard did build after the 56 was sold. Anyway, Ruth asked if I had ever heard the Road Runner story, I said oh sure, and related it back to him. He said oh there's more to the story than that, and told me how they avenged Jonesy lost to the Hemi Cuda with the Two Lane car while it was still blue & white.

  15. That's great, soon as its setup we'll send ours.

  17. Yes that chevy ll was fast but not fast enough to win the word championship. The vega was fast also but due to the superior engineering of the hemi the mopars carried more weight.not a fair fight. At least the chevy guys can feel good about winning a lopsided battle. There is a real good chance the jakes speedshop car that was the original candies and hughes 65 ply and the original charlie allen 65 dodge awb. A few more are going to let me know.

  18. A good friend of mine Robert Pond races a 2 4bbl 427/4spd '67 Fairlane in NHRA A/S, AA/S, & has run a best of 9.60 @ 140 mph. The baddest 426 Hemi car I can think of that runs in these same cl***es, is Jason McCormick's '66 Hemi Coronet, and although a *****EN car, all he's got is 9.80's & low mid 130's? The Super Stock Hemi Cuda's used to run in SS/AA, (automatic), or SS/A (stick) cl***. A few years ago John Armstrong, out of Canada, got his single 4BBl. 427 Corvette in the 8.60's (right where the Hemi Cudas were running at the time). He approached NHRA about competing in the SS/AA-SS/A Shoot Out @ Indy that year which had been ruled by the Hemi cars for years. The Hemi boys had such a tizzy fit, that NHRA, gave em there own cl*** SS/AH (Super Stock A Hemi). Seems the Elephant was afraid of a little Rat infestation.

  19. As I asked before RacerX, which car ya bringing?, maybe I can find some worthy compe***on for you.

  20. the chrysler coupe 1931 cm-6 we can all look at a individual cl*** or race or season and say this car or that was dominant. over the long haul it has been the hemi. and if we want to put it under a microscope top fuel and funny car has been ruled by the mighty hemi since the early 70s. thank you john force for using a hemi to power your ford for all those championships. the hemi was outlawed for indy banned for a time from nascar and penalized by weight from nhra. how much more could it have won with out one hand tied behind its back

If the 555 pump gas motor was gonna be done for my 55, I'd be your Huckleberry. All steel, licensed, registered and insured...even has the back seat in it. Oh, and it has a 5 speed and 5 spoke rims too! I think I'm in a rut! Anybody make a five barrel carb??? Maybe I'll call it "5's Wild" or "Fistful a' Fives".

  22. The baddest normally aspirated engines I've made pistons for make 3HP per cubic inch. Not one is based on a 426 or earlier Hemi. Probably the baddest 426 based Hemis are the Super Stockers & at 441" & 1025ish HP, they're @ 2.35hp per inch. The baddest 399" Australian Pro Stock engine I know of is GM splayed valve SMALL BLOCK, made 1162, that's 2.91 per inch!

    GENE CROMER DONATION FUND

Uncle Dirty, Quain and myself want to get these donations going....we are in the process of setting up a Paypal account for Meltdown Drags for just such a situation.
But not ready yet, I am the President of the Meltdown and happy to take any donations to my Paypal...I am personally (NOT MDA) me personally donating $50 to this fund to get the ball rolling.

As Joel will testify, all funds are more than safe here with me! I will be creating a log on who donated what....should he be unable to attend, these funds will be returned to the same person who gave them.
PAYPAL e_koopmeiners@hotmail.com (that is e underscore k) not a blank.

SEND all funds as a gift via paypal, so there are no fee's taken out, then we can get him every penny!

Or PM me if you wish to mail a check........

There was a lot of talk here about racing for money and "who's is bigger" lets see who's REALLY is bigger and put our money where their mouth is and make a donation to help a retired LEGEND make it out to the Meltdown!

Everyone can afford $10- $20 to make this happen....some can afford much more....

THANK YOU in advance for any donations you make.....this is yet another reason the Meltdown is the Best Vintage Drag meet in the country....guys aren't worried about winning a few bucks but would rather give it to a Legend......I am proud to be part of this!

  27. why then are your 3 hp per ci engines not replacing everything out there? when will we see it in a fuel car? sure there are some cl***es that allow for a advantage over the hemi i will give you that. now when the gloves come off and we go unlimited the hemi has and will always be king. a hemi and a blower is a match made in heaven. thats were they really shine. over the years the hemi has evolved and has proven the design is still compe***ive. it has shown it can go head to head at the engine masters compe***ion with the first design or allen john sons pro stock championship in the latest design. new or old in capable hands the design has proven its a head ha ha above the rest. my friend jimmy young from wisconsin racing with a hemi in the crop duster spanked some huge ca. *** at the last two march meets. I'm sure they were more than 3 hp. per ci.
