    Jack,
Which ID plate did we decide was correct? The brass one?

Good morning, if there is room in two different places (ie, frame and firewall) it would be nice to use both.

    Jerry,

The brass plate is obviously from a 1929 truck & the screw pattern matches the layout on my cowl which is the same as yours but I think your truck was a little older than 29 since it does not have front brakes.

The other plate is from a 1921 pumper originally sold to San Mateo, Ca. in 1921, interestingly it returned to San Mateo in 1993 & I assume is still there.

The brass one would likely be correct for your original truck

    Jerry,

As a point of reference here are pictures of my 1911 Buick model 32. The car is very correct & the color is as the factory did it - everything is red. This car has never been restored but has had paint jobs & many components rebuilt over the last 103 years. The original red paint is on much of the frame & matches the rest of the paint.

I think Buick did not stripe the factory speedster to set it apart from the regular cars.

Had you thought of a brass script on the radiator?

    Mac,

No it is a model 32 factory built speedster. The Bug was a race car designated as a model 60. It had a 622 cid engine & was made for the track. It certainly looks like a bug -- a very meaningful bug!

The Bug would look better with some pizza pans on the wheels. :)

Tail lights and hood hold downs

I finished up the hold downs on the left side of the hood then I started to work on the tail lights. It was very cold in the shop! I mounted the new bulb socket and began to make a spacer for the glass lens to keep it from rattling around. I figure I need some brake lights if I'm going to drive down the road. To hell with tag and insurance but brake lights might be nice. Now here's a tech problem. For some reason some of the pictures come out upside down when I try to post them. They look okay on my computer but when I upload them they're upside down or turned 90 degrees. If I turn them before I post them then still come out upside down or turned. I'm posting them any way so you'll just have to turn your monitor.

  13. Are you shooting these with your phone now are you still using your real camera? Some image hosting services will let you rotate pictures after you upload them, but I don't think you can do that when you load them directly onto the HAMB.

    What the...

This ain't no Giant Speedster! I know, I know. My wife's birthday was this weekend so I had to spend a lot of time cooking chili and raking leaves and buying food. Everyone had a big time and that's why you haven't heard from me. I'm back now, but I'm not working on the speedster. I have to get this car hauler running. I built this thing about 6 years ago (maybe 10) and it's been sitting for about 3 now. I was thinking about using it to haul the speedster around although I'll have to lengthen it somewhat. Originally it had a diesel, but it blew up and I put in a Dodge 318 out of a motorhome with 25K on it. Today I drained out 10 gallons of bad gas. Put on a new coil and ballast resistor and when I fired it up found out it had a crankcase full of water. I hope it's rain water. One of the vents on the valve cover was uncovered. I drained it out and put in oil. I'll find out tomorrow if the engine is okay. My big son wants to use it to move into a new house and I needed an excuse to get it going anyway. That's a 1914 REO touring inside.

I had a '14 Buick we used on a couple of tours with the family but I had to sell it to pay the property taxes. Such is our economy. Anyway the '14 REO was going to take it's place but the Seagrave literally showed up on my doorstep while I was working on the REO and my rule is: Always work on the most exciting project first.

    What is that in feet?

  25. That would be 1/48th of a foot, wouldn't it? I think I scraped that much frost off my windshield a couple mornings ago!

Now I've got to see if Google can convert that into furlongs.

  26. Governor Deal has declared that GA is in a state of emergency...

I've learned a couple things living down here for the last 10 years-

    1) GADot doesn't have the equipment to handle this kind of weather

    2) Folk down here just aren't used to driving in it, either.

The kids had fun outside. No school tomorrow either. Thank God the power hasn't gone off. Although, we just got a call from the mother-in-laws house that water was running out of the apartment over the garage. I shouldn't have answered the phone.

  28. .25 inch is equivalent to:
    0.0090714285714 arms-length
    0.74705882353 barleycorn
    50.8 gnat's eye
    63.5 hair's breadth
    2.0578949112e-19 parsec
    0.0037313432836 smoot

Of course that's the modern smoot, used to measure yak tongues, and not the ancient smoot...

(Of course, the modern smoot. Why would you measure ANYTHING in the ancient smoot?)

  30. That's what we call a "skiff', or "dusting" of snow up here........slightly more than a heavy frost.
