Event Coverage The Official 2014 Meltdown Drags #5 thread, vintage drag meet, July 18,19&20 Byron IL

  1. My thoughts exactly!

  2. A couple years ago, there was a little Top Alky Dragster team, S&S Automotive, the Santos Bros.& Dad. Through the 80's they worked and worked, on there small block powered digger, and finally got it to compete with, and start beating the Hemi boys. Then, during the off season, NHRA added weight to their combo, even though they. weren't dominating..,yet. So the Santos's took out the 2speed (B&J I believe), and put in a 3 speed to add the weight. Funny thing, it was faster! They refined the combo up into the late 90's or so, & won two National ***les, while enduring yearly weight additions to try and quell the Mighty Mouse. These weight add on's were in FACT, brought on by the constant power whining of after market Hemi parts manufactures who were infuriated with the onslaught of defeat, not to mention the constant nagging from their parts customers wanting to know "why their mighty Hemi" couldn't catch the single mouse that roared. Finally, the weight burden became to much for the "little engine that could. The Santos clan then teamed up with Jack Obannan, with a Hemi in the frame rails, and sent the power whiners packing again..,for several seasons, until they had mercy, parked their rig, and let the pw's have the sand box for awhile. Hey wait a minute, isn't there also a small block powered Nostalgia Top Fuel campaigned by Champion Speed Shop, with Adam Sorokin on the yoke that also throws Hemis a smack'n with regularity..,yep.

I mean no disrespect to any Mopar/Hemi pilots, just get tired of hearing someone constantly flapping his jaws about "there is only ONE way"!, and though it sure looks as though I've been singing a small block Chevy song the whole time, my point is.., the bigger they are, the harder they fall. Remeber, David whipped Goliath with a stone, and a sling shot.

Sorry boys, I threw this post up before you asked for a half time break.

    MDA guys,
I want to make sure that we will be able to drop off our rods and put our trailers in the correct parking area on THURSDAY at the track. Will it be a quick in and quick out deal? For those of us driving from over 6 or 7 hours (or more) away it would be wonderful to drop off the racer and not have to keep it in a motel parking lot. Let us know some particulars on this if possible. Hey and keep those public service announcements coming on the Official MDA website. Informative and entertaining...Thanks!

Ric, there is no way I'm going to let anyone say I don't have a hairy ***... so it's on, the thrash has commenced! If I can get her ready I guess I can be the "huckleberry":D

  12. This car is BAD ***! I had meant to ask if anyone knew/could invite him to the party. Before our ole PC & J 56 was built, the original intention was to build a '39 Chevy business coupe, 40's are just as cool in my book, and as stated this dude and his chebbie have been together for a long, long, long time.

  13. I would like to take a moment and say, that in the last week, I have been PM'd by several of the key ingredient people of the MD group, and they have been nothing but gracious, enthusiastic, and supportive of myself, and others making the effort to get to this race. If anyone out there, thinks that a trip to this event, may be a waste of time for them, either as a racer, or spectator, I highly doubt that. I would just like to publicly thank all of these great guys, and I'm sure there are some great gals in the group too, for making this race possible.

Brian - if your seeing this.....AWESOME addition to the N&S shootout....Brian is a cool guy for those that dont know him and his Dad campaigned the car back in the 60's. I am told his Dad was at a Califorina Winter Nationals in the Mid-60's and he told one of the NGRA guys that the Meltdown is EXACTLY what the pits looked like when he atttended in the mid-60's.
BRIAN - great to have you bro.....The North may have just got the upper hand!

    I agree with Ric.

As a guy running one of the decidedly slower cars that is not going to be a factor in the G***er Wars or much of a crowd draw,I was a little surprised, and very impressed with how incredibly well I have been treated by everyone involved with the Meltdown Drags.

Any question I had was promptly answered, and I was never treated like "just a number",more like a member of the family.

Thanks for everything guys, and I think it's a safe bet that none of you will have to pay for a drink all weekend!:D

Falfasnightmare I'm glad to have the opportunity to join the event and thanks for the welcome

Powershifter I am living the dream but if it were not for lots of great inspiration from all these guys and lots of help from friends it wouldn't be possible speaking of dreams a blown hemi and a hydro like you have that's the dream lol I just need that in the Willys instead of the boring old 327 4speed in it
