Dumb question, I dropped a 5/16 lil wrench down toward the trans on my deuce. I can't find it anywhere and I am concerned it ended up in the bottom of the bell housing through the hole fore the clutch. I ran a magnet and one of those finger grabbing things in there with no results. Should I drop the trans and take a look or ride it out? Posted using the Full Custom H.A.M.B. App!
I'd find it. Sounds stupid, but drop another the same way and watch were it goes. It could be stuck someplace else too.
That's a good idea. Thank u. I don't really want to drop the trans just for the damn wrench that I don't know for sure to be in there . But if I can't find it I guess I prob should Posted using the Full Custom H.A.M.B. App!
I've found stuff laying on the frame rails and other places where I thought I had looked. Stranger things have happened. I would also suggest cranking it over some and listening to it before pulling the trans.
That's a smart question, really Murphy's law dictates,,,,,well you know the rest. I just got done tearing my Caddy apart looking for something I dropped in the works.
31Vicky WHAT? You could drop 10 5/16 lil wrenches from approximately the same angle and all 10 would fall in slightly different ways and directions. And if one did go into the ****** he'd have to take it apart anyway. So just do it and don't take any chances. Gee that sounds stupid.
Maybe you could fish around with a coat hanger to see if it makes noise. If you hear it, get some friends to flip the car over and shake it...
The rubber mallet is a good idea, I will try that shortly. Getting a few outside things done before I lose light. Thanks for the suggestions . The most irritating thing is gonna be if I drop the trans and the damn thing isn't in there Posted using the Full Custom H.A.M.B. App!
That is an excellent idea - just be sure to use a wood or leather mallet...otherwise you'd never hear your lost wrench from a metal hammer hitting the bellhousing.
Remember if you haven't found it yet........... Where is it? If it ain't outside it's gotta be in there. The heavy magnet trick might work to at least listen to see if you can hear it moving around.
I tried to look/feel on the top, it is a tremec five speed. Posted using the Full Custom H.A.M.B. App!
Well the rubber mallet yeilded no sound , gonna feed the baby and look for a heavy magnet. Posted using the Full Custom H.A.M.B. App!
Want to hear the story of how I learned the need to find stuff that's been lost? If so read on, if not just skip it. Id say I was about 12 or 13 years old and my dad was helping me over my shoulder do the top end on a Suzuki trail hopper 2 stroke Mini bike. It was all me with guidance. Everything is done and ready for ***embly. Jug bored honed washed. Rings filed to size and installed on the new piston. Wrist pin cleaned and size checked. Gaskets set in. All the parts are laid out and ready. So Dad had to pull some OT and we didnt get to put it together the next day, or the next day, or the next day, or the next day. Now you know that's an eternity for a 13 year old with the coolest mini bike ever. So Saturday came and went too and the OT wasn't stopping even for Sunday. So in my infinite wisdom gathered over my short but colorful 13 years and this being my second rebuild - I decide I'm going to put it together. So piston on rod, wrist pin thru - step one complete. Tiny little cir-clip wrist pin retainer not so good. The piston kept spitting it out like a watermelon seed, but I kept finding it. The third time I hunted that mother****er it was hiding really well. It wasnt on the floor, or under the bench like the other times-I found it stuck in the rag that was wrapped around the connecting rod keeping **** out of the crank case. So one more time I try to install the clip from hell and the piston spits it out again. But this time I can't find it and the rag that was hiding it the last time was removed in the prior search, and in the exultation of finding it the rag didnt get out back. No place to be found, anywhere in the garage, vanished. Well I go get the old clip, stick it in there no problem and ****on it all back up. Get her fired up and rode it that entire weekend. What a blast !! You know the first ride after a rebuild feeling, plus the kid with a mini bike feeling all warped up into one. Dad was proud that I did it by myself too!! While out cruising the scoot thru the woods I dumped it. No damage to me or the bike but it stalled and wouldn't start. I had to push it for about 1/2 mile back to the house. I get my dad when he comes home from work and he declares the motor locked up. Did you have oil in the gas? Yes dad Remember not in the oil injector tank, but mixed in the gas? Yes dad Ok tell me exactly what happened? So I tell him Are you hurt ? No dad Ok don't tell your mother that part. Ok dad Ill take it with me and tear it apart at work, I'm pretty sure it won't be easy. Thanks dad So the next day he get home from work and says, one more time tell me exactly what happened. So I did. Then he says how about you tell me exactly what happened when you out the engine together. So I did. Then he says well hopefully you learned why its important to #1 keep your open holes covered. There's a reason I tell you this stuff ! And #2 to find the **** you loose. There were 2 cri clips in the wrist pin and a 3rd cir clip stuck between the piston and the cylinder, would you like to keep it for a reminder? That was a hard lesson to learn.
You'd be surprised at how not stupid it is when it comes to finding ****. I agree it sounds stupid and said so myself but it gives an idea of where to look. Guy was looking for a special bolt for 20 mins. I told him to knock another off just like the first one. He looks at me like I'm stupid, like you did with the :eek stuff but he found his bolt in 30 seconds and about a min to fish it out. Shouldn't that hole have a cover anyway? So why not cover it before you start dropping stuff?
Great story 31, sounds like a talk I had a time or two with my dad as a kid. As for the hole it can't be covered completly on a reg basis as the clutch (mechanical) needs at least some room to move when you push the pedal in. I should be able to fashion something to cover it short term though. I'll rummage around Posted using the Full Custom H.A.M.B. App!
Turn the engine over by hand, if it's leaning against the clutch/flywheel it should either lock up or drop down.
Just get a small child to come out in the garage, they will find it immediately ! If you didn't hear it hit the floor then you know it's lodged on the bell housing / floor area somewhere.
Here is another option. (I bought this tool to help rescue a bolt that dropped into the oil pan.) Harbor Freight sells an inspection camera. 38" flexible shaft with a small camera on the end. There is also a light and some attachments that fit onto the end of the shaft. The handheld part has a 2.4" screen that shows what the camera sees. Its pretty neat. I grabbed the bolt with the magnet attachment after a few minutes. My friend also used it to look at his intake port thru the carb.
Eric, that is a good idea. If I don't find it tonight I will prob hit harbor frieght and grab one of those Posted using the Full Custom H.A.M.B. App!
Well the magnet , clothes hanger, and rubber/wood mallet are kinda leading me to thinking that it isn't in the bell housing. Tried all three and couldnt find any noise or evidence of wrench. Gotta hang it up for the night but gonna try tapping off the hole and dropping another wrench tomorrow. If I dont find it tomorrow I am gonna take eric's advice and look at that optic thing, I am sure this isnt the last time I will lose something. We have one at work but they might get mad if I take the really expensive one off of the rescue to work on my old hot rod, lol!
If you have a buddy who is a plumber, they often have these cameras. Buy him a beer and borrow it. One of them saved me by finding a small nut stuck into the top of a piston, I stuck the camera through the plug hole. Good luck.
