Maybe the Galpin Ford Police told them not to cut the rear fenders, and that is why it is jacked up in the air like a Monster Truck !!!

I couldn't for the life of me understand why they did that.
The paint jobs they put on those cars are really nice,too....too bad they weren't packing a little more "go" with all that "show"...

I think they're referring to the '57 Ford and the '55 Chevy that are owned or built by Carpenter at Galpin. There's also a '55 Ford I think, which I've only seen a small picture of, and it looked better.

  7. OOps, looks like my Bad. I was up on stage and didn't see who won, but my buddy said it was the "Offroad Looking Gold Thing" so I thought that's the one he was referring to. :D

  8. Am I correct that "in theory" my ride height should start with stock height in the rear with the tire size determining the height and the radius required in the fender. No reason to raise it through other means.

Article on one of the Galpin Fords said they raised the rear so they didnt have to cut the body. Seems backward to me.

  9. A reminder where I am starting from, a 39 Hudson.

I think you've got er pretty well figured out Dave:)
Plus, your rear fenders are removable, which will allow you to mock up the car, then fit and trim them til theyre perfect.
MAN I love that car of yours!:)

  11. Thanks Scott. I got lucky and found it 50 miles away. Original owner (as shown) had it on the road in 2007 then blew it apart to paint and change motor. Retired and plans changed. I got it now.

Those rear fenders need a radius IMO.

I'd definitely say you're heading in the right direction Dave.
Pull the fenders, set it up with the wheel and tire. combo you want,reinstall/trim fenders, and let the ride height fall where the tires dictate.

I start out with the wheels and tires I plan on running and build the car around them. Although the front of my 55 looks higher, the rocker panel is the same height off the ground, front to rear. Where race cars can get away with a tighter radius, street driven cars need a bit more tire to fender clearance for the rear suspension movement on the street.

    Hi Dave

How about Bobing the fender a tick on the part that hangs down in front of the running board line

Gassers have to have slicks sticking out just a bit of the cut out rear fenders !!!!!!!!!!

And mounted on mags are bonus points

I would never set my suspension or stance to accommodate not cutting the body. I also wouldn't rule out adjusting ride height a little to get the look you like, or to possibly avoid a small amount of alteration, as long as it gets the stance you like still.
When I radiused the rear wheelwells on my Falcon I wanted to retain the stock side trim, so I didn't cut them up so high as to have to remove the trim. It was a bit of a compromise to going lower, but I felt it was worth to keep the molding I liked.
Since my Austin has removable rear fenders I set up the suspension and ride first, then cut the fenders to clear the tire and wheel combo I chose. No worries about side trim or anything else that would dictate changing stance.

  19. That or the '57 Ford. Hard to believe, after the roadster accident at the show, this ding dong does a big burnout in the outside area as he's leaving the show sundaynight, where everyone is moving cars and packing up after the show. Robert, who is responsible for the gasser/drag car building will surely receive an ass chewing for this guys squirrely behavior.

Never have understood the mentality of guys who think it's cool to do crap like that in an area full of cars or people. It only takes one problem to have it all go wrong, and then others suffer for their stupidity.

Just think about the name on the car and they get away with it, right

Look at the car, wanabe racers built it not the real period deal at all

One crash with a car like that and they all will be pushed into place at the shows

They will never get it [ not enough grey matter ]

We had a tool pull a similar stunt at a show that was held downtown about ten years ago:

Great venue, lots of shops open for the 'civilians',lots of publicity and revenue generated for the downtown area, and the whole street blocked off for about a mile.Tons of really good parking, access to food and restrooms, etc.Basically a car show dream scenario.

Then this dipshit decides that he is going to fire up his 65 vette drag car....ok,neighbors in surrounding hirise buildings probably not too keen on open headered BBC race engine, but fair enough...

Then he decides to idle it around the downtown area.....ummm.....this is just starting to piss people off.

Icing on the cake: He stops between two rows of cars, with people everywhere, and puts it up against the line lock and does the biggest fucking burnout I have seen in years.

    Kids are crying.

Women are running to get out of the way.

And every car guy within 1000miles has got a WTF are you DOING!?!? look on his face.....

And THAT is how to get the best car show in town UNINVITED from a really great venue single handedly. :(

    So Don:

It's been pretty slow on here lately....I was hoping that maybe you could hit us with one of your killer stories from back in the day...?

The one about McEwen's Barracuda was probably my favorite of all time!!!

Have you got some more of those totally the troops around here...?:)

The magic in those stories is the behind the scenes stuff that most of us never realized, like the last minute tire change on that Plymouth that caused so much grief...

Thanks for stickin' with us Don.
You've really helped me out and inspired me with my coupe project.Hopefully withing the next couple of months I will have some decent progress made and start a build thread.:)

Not much bothers me at a car show. But a few years back at one of the best shows around here, this guy rolls in a '38 Chevy coupe gasser that is really a cool car. Problem was he decides that about every 15-20 minutes he should fire up the BBC with open headers and rev the crap out of it. It was OK the first time, but pretty soon we had to walk away from our cars each time he started it, just to keep from losing what's left of our hearing!

  26. Gasser story for Scott:
During the last round of qualifying at the '66 March Meet, we lost third gear in the Muncie of our B/G '56 (Panneton Christensen & Jones. Dick Jones who was the "shoe" tells dad "well, I guess we're done, lets pack up and do some "rail birding" (spectating). Dad says, "we didn't come to watch, we came to race, lets move our pit way down away from everyone". Jones asks "what for", dads says, "come on, you'll see". So after they move, dad takes one of his T- shirts, and some empty oil cans, and drains & strains gear oil out of of the trans. The he pulled the gear box, took it apart and cleaned all the big chunks out. Dad put it all back together, and told Jones, "don't tell anyone that we're wounded"! The next day, time for eliminations, now we got most the other B cars covered, a couple as good as us, and Fred Teixierra's big bad injected 426 Hemi/clutch flight 41 Willys. In the first round we get a fast car that would be tuff if we DID have 3rd gear. Jones does a couple burnouts, extra dry hops taking a bunch of time, they finally stage, and the other dude red lights big time!, Jones strategy worked on that guy, and several others. He is able to out run the others even while having to shift from 2nd to 4th, and makes it to the final, where the Willys is waiting. Now Jones figures his only hope, is a Hail Mary Hole Shot, and hope Fred, whose lights have been soft all day because of his performance advantage, will make a mistake. On the last amber, Jones drops the hammer, and puts a huge "gate job" on the Willys.., Jones says "I never saw him in low gear! When he puts the '56 in 2nd, Jones says, "he put his nose in my quarter window. Now Jones shifts from 2nd to 4th, and the Willys jumps up even, and slowly pulls ahead for a car length win. Jones has said all these years, "if I could relive one run, it'd be that one with a "whole" trans, I'm pretty sure we could have held him off, that 400" small block we had with just a 4.11 gear, had a big top end charge, but no third, left her a little lame.

Surprising to see so many photos of Beetles in the Grand National Roadster Show at all, let alone the Gasser Class. Almost the dominant make/model.
