  1. There were 4 Beetles there - three of them were very significant car, the 2 Lightning Bugs of the Schley Bros and the Deano Dyno Soars car. There were also two VW powerered dragsters, One was the Schley's and the other was Gene Berg - again VERY significant car

  2. The blue heavy flake paint on one of the Lightning Bugs is out a sight!

  7. Here is another San Fernando story. As many of you know the mid to latter sixties saw a feverish transition of Super Stock cars turn into A-C/FX, then to altered wheel base cars which got coined as "funny looking cars", which became "funny cars". At the same time, the rules kept getting relaxed in the gas classes both supercharged and normally aspirated and they too were slowly morphing into "funny cars". As the popularity of gassers started to dwindle (Damn!), and funny cars became more popular, alot of unblown gasser started running in various "injected funny car class's. Because of this dad started running our 56 on methanol, to get a hang on the tune. I recently found a San Fernando race report from Feb. 1967, in Dave Wallace's DVD copies of Drag News. It says, "B/G 56 For Little Eliminator" "The wild injected 56 Chevy of Panneton, Jones, & Christensen downed all comers for Little Eliminator, including Garland Spinks D/Dragster with an elapsed time of 11.43 @ 133.34! The trio plans on tipping the can again, and running the 2800 lb. Injected Funny class at Bakersfield next month". Why the slow ET & big mph you ask, pie crust (no hook) skicks, & a tallish 4.11 gear.

Not to go off-topic or against the H.A.M.B. spirit of things. Just speaking about the significant VWs at the Roadster Show and all, I thought that this might be of some interest:

Might have already been posted somewhere, if so, please delete it OK?

I've been so busy with work, lawyers and family stuff, that I haven't had much time to get on here for very long lately.

In a couple more weeks things should be settled with Pig Vomit (the ex wife),and I will be home and thinking about old cars again!

In the mean time,I'm going out tonight (probably not for long, cause its -35 up here) to pick a 4-71 off an old diesel pump motor I found....Free Superchargers are ok by me. :D

Hey Don,here's a question for you:

Knowing what you now know after building the Chevy back in the day,if you had it to do all over again, would you do anything differently?
Such as car make and model, engine type and displacement, transmission type, etc?
Was there any combination that really seemed like magic?Something you always wanted to try?

Hey Don, you should think about taking a vacation in July to Byron Illinois. Ric, Scott and Quain will all be there too.

Thanks for the invite guys but at 72' my traveling days are over, and just have my great memories and that's OK

And I really don't like seeing the front wheels up in the air like the cars do now

Scott you asked about building a car now, would not change a thing as in 62' - 63' when building my 37' a Hilborn Injected 327' was the hot ticket and a T 10 4 speed

I ran 11.85 on a 11.84 record the first day out at San Fernando in 64' plus took home the trophy and two yrs later set the record at Irwindale at 121.80, was in Hot Rod Mag and few good car shows so like I say I would change a thing

So I could not have had a better car for the time, and the car was 95% restored a few yrs ago and is in Scottsdale AZ

My time is spent now building models like two 1/4 scale 4 foot Mahogany Runabout's with a non running Hilborn injected flathead engine, my friend Ray is doing the wood work i'am making all the metal hardware and the engines plus a few changes like the racing style transom mounted rudder

The small parts are the brass nozzles made out of 1/8" sq brass rod with a 1/8" drill to show the size and a 0-80 screw

  19. How many cars ran stock grills? If they didnt mod the grill for a moon tank did they stick with stock? Or, did it depend on what condition the car they started with was in?

I have the stock grill in mint condition on the Hudson. Not sure how I will go?

Dave if you are going to set back the engine 10% , you should have room between the engine and radiator to put in a tank in that space

In the 37' I made a rectangle shaped one because of the front mounted Hilborn pump took up some space

Plus the rectangle shape will hold more gas than that round one if you need more gallons

All over the place Dave. I saw a lot more gassers with stock grilles and no Moon tank than any with modified or no grilles and Moon tanks. Seems like most who ran a Moon tank didn't even run a grille, but a few modified their grille or set the tank out front of the grille until NHRA made them move inside the frame horns. In the late 60's the tanks had to be in a protected location, and I had mine on my '55 Chev gasser behind the grille. Tri 5's had plenty of room if you eliminated the hood latch support.

What do you all think about the level of craftsmanship for the real gassers as part of being correct as a must have? Meaning, I owned an original barn find 57 gasser, as well as studied a few in junk yards over the years. At least in my experience, the stick welds were horrible, cross members were made from torch cut unfinished metal, roll bars were screwed together two inch gas pipe. In one case, to get height, the guy put a block of wood between the mono front spring and frame. I was under the impression it was all about speed and money was tight for the average guy so these cars would not of won any beauty contests.

You seem to see a lot of the Willys with the ford holey grille, I'm assuming they used them because they are so much lighter than a stock Willys grille ???

From what I have seen it looks like only the big names with sponsors from the later years had nicely finished cars, like you some of the old gassers I have seen are pretty gnarly !!!

What fiberglass body's were available for the Gassers in the later 60s. There were lots of fenders and that sort of stuff, but the only complete body that I can think of was a 33 and 41 willys and I'm not sure about the 33.

As to cars that were pretty well finished I saw what I believe to be a pretty even mix. I worked in my grandfather’s collector car restoration shop (he had one dating back to the late 40s) and knew what a well finished car looked like. I ran with some guys from 1967 through 1970 and I remember a black 37 Chevy (B/G), a local car with no lettering that had one of the nicest paint jobs around. The Midwest Vettes were some of the nicest looking cars and there were many good looking Willys. I remember so many great looking and running cars that it hooked me for life. The interiors were certainly not as nice as some of the cars I see today and the engine compartments looked more business than show but the exteriors I thought were overall pretty nice. Some were 5 footers maybe but still nice stuff. There were some crude pieces but some of those cars ran pretty strong. There were some cars that should have never been on the track but the track owners figured the more the merrier and helped put people in the seats and fatten the daily take hopefully.

Maybe it helped that we were in the backyard of the big three and lots of nice stuff ran here but overall I was impressed with the look of most of the cars. The muffler tubing rollbars may have been a reality but I never knew of any guys running them. The guys I knew did pretty good work. They may have bent the rules a bit here and there, but that is somewhat normal when competition had consequences.

As to availability of fiberglass, there were some bodies available in the late 60s for the funnies but before I mainly remember fenders and doors and front ends (the 37 I reference above had a flip fiberglass frontend with a solid grill and maybe 2” holes drilled in the front). When I hooked up with the guys that I ran with they wanted me to do the bodywork on their 57 Vette and it was a mess. I wanted the job and told them I knew how to do fiberglass which was an outright lie. I talked to my grandfather and asked if he knew anyone that worked with fiberglass and he had a friend that built fiberglass tanks show me how. When I went to his shop on Livernois he had a number of drag cars fenders and parts that he had made. There were some large fiberglass manufacturers but also some smaller ones. My dad’s shop (J&D Fabricators/Pigeon Manufacturing) made some fiberglass hood scoops and later a few prototype hoods for the new Shelby GT 350s (because my dad told them grafting fiberglass scoops on metal was not the best of ideas-I remember talking to him about it). Lots of small shops making parts in my neck of the woods. I had a picture of a new Shelby on my wall before they ever hit production.

The big meets were sure eye candy for a kid like myself. It hooked me good.

Haven't looked close at a bunch of barn find, or leftover gassers, but it seems those that I've observed that still haven't been restored and put right are pretty ugly workmanship. Some of them scare me with how shaky things like steering and suspension was done, but haven't seen any wood in the builds. Mostly it's just bad stick welds, and lack of gussets and supports. Some of the guys who raced these style builds must have had huge balls to go over 100 mph with the way they were built.
I built my first gasser in 1968 on a '40 Chevy coupe, with 413 Chrysler and 727 trans. I had very little access to a lot of necessary equipment, so I had to drag it to a neighbor's garage and he helped me swap out the A arm front suspension, and put in a late 40's Ford transverse spring setup. I was lucky, as he built circle track cars and was emphatic that everything was over done, rather than built lightweight. The car wasn't as fast as I hoped, but it drove well, and went straight safely.

  29. all the stores sold stick welders from sear catalogue to the local co-op and everyone had 6011 or 7018 rods and used the tools that could be had locally trying to get new metal was hard as most places only had 4x8 body sheet metal and the tin smiths had galvanized sheets now there are 5 metal suppliers and more fastener suppliers with in 1hr drive it's all about access and knowledge
