Anyone out there remember when Drag Times Mag was in Arlington Va? I worked down stairs in a Chrome Shop during the late 1960's and saw some photo shoots of drag cars that were running at Capitol and Aqusaco.
I didn't spend much time in N. Va. in the late 60s so I can't speak to the location you speak about, but if you haven't had a chance to look at the thread on here about Aquasco, check it out.
They started out as "Mid Eastern Drag News" circa 1963. Then became "Eastern Drag News" from 64 to 65. then it gets a little fuzzy there seems to be two magazines at the same time in 66. At that time I moved and did not go to the races with the MG I now have so lost interest in the subscription. But I do have every EDN in 64 and 65 some 63 and some 66-69. Pat
I remember going over to the Drag Times offices every so often. Cool little place. I'd sure like to know where all those pictures disappeared to. I recall the chrome shop and Jacks junkyard too. Got lots of parts for my '56 Chevy there. Ate at the Weenie Beanie every time I was over there. Good times.
I used to purchase Eastern Drag News at the drag strips all the time. They cost .25 cents in 1964 and in 1965 they went up to .35 cents an issue. I likes that they always showed the results from drag strips up and down the east coast. I have a few boxes of then that I saved over the years. Jimbo
One reason I like to keep all these old programs and magazines is they come in handy from time to time like when I have someone on the phone ordering decals from me and he tells me about his old drag race car and how he ran the 1964 US Nationals in Indy. While I am talking to him I pull out my old program from the 1964 US Nationals and sure enough there's the guy name so I ask him to you live in Garden Grove Calif. at the time and he say's yes but how did you know that because now he lives in Minnesota!!!!!! He offered me a great deal of money for that old program but I really don't like to sell these old things because the memories mean more to me then the money. Jimbo
I don't have any old copies of the magazine. They're long gone. I did grow up just up the hill from there. Jack's, J&M Machine, ATF and the public TV station were all on Four Mile Run Dr. The last trip I made up there about 6 months ago included a trip to the Weenie Beenie for a half smoke.
........So the Weenie Beenie is still there? That's pretty amazing. I may have to make the trip over there for some food.
I have a complete set of Eastern Drag News, 1962-1965. The first two issues were Maryland Virginia Drag News then went to Eastern Drag News on No. 3. I also have all of the 8x10 BW inserts that were with the early issues. Monk Reynolds of SS&DI fame started it and eventually sold the rights to "Drag Times". The last few issues were of a newspaper style printing. The problem with scanning these is that a flat table scanner will result in breaking the spine of the book. The paper has become brittle over the years and they will tear easily. They are great pieces of history especially if you are into the early SS/AFX scene as I am....
We had a thread a while back on Eastern Drag News, that leads up to Drag Times. I don't know how to attach a link to the thread, maybe some can do this for me. If you type this in you will get there. Eastern Drag News..one of the best drag rags
.....I don't know how to attach a link either so I bumped that thread back up so more folks can see it. It hadn't been posted on for well over a year.
I remember the black guys from Green Valley ordering half smokes with tartar sauce?? Not me, but the half smokes were pretty good. Those sure were fun times.
Here is that thread about Eastern Drag news. http://www.jalopyjournal.com/forum/showthread.php?t=458932
Thanks for all the pics and the links on Drag Times.I still have a few of those late 1960's Drag times mags hidden away. My brother's and I ran a 1969 Roadrunner at some of the local tracks back then , such great times. I still remember Wennie Bennie (they would fix you a killer breakfast sandwitch too...if you asked) thanks guys
I envy you guys who have a full collection of this great magazine, all that history at your finger tips. I have twenty issues of EDN in magazine format and two in newspaper format. I also have a few issues of Drag Times. As long as photobucket does not give me too much trouble, I will scan up some covers. Here is the October 8, 1965 issue. This is got to be the 1st or 2nd issue in newspaper format, as my Sept 17, 1965 is still magazine format.
This cover adds more confusion to this publication...June 4, 1965 is magazine format with Drag Times and Eastern Drag News. They must have been produced separately then merging and settlling on a newspaper format.
Great pics,We used 4 Mile run near Drag Times many times ...a quarter mile at a time back in the day. I will dig out my copies of drag times and post soon. Anyone out there from District Heights Md? My brothers and I had a paint shop( Called POWANDA"S Auto Body) on Marlboro Pike in about 1970/1971 beside Penningtons Custom Auto Interior. Get custom paint and interior all in one area.I wish I had saved those old photographs.
Many hours of surfing in that post it's so long and well received. And the history lessons are great.
