What did you take your drivers license test in?

78 chrysler new yorker, actually learned in a 49 plymouth but dad thought driving a stick for an exam would make me nervous. he let me take the family car and it was a cruiser for sure !

a IH loadstar was on a road test after repairing it and decided to go for my driver test when the tester asked what i was driving i pointed to the ten wheeler. then i did some errands and went to the tavern to pick-up my father the guy that gave me the test was sitting drinking with him.

 

1970 Camaro, LT1, with headers, and aluminum slots. Lady tester said the car was to loud, and my hair was to long! She bitched at me during the entire test,and failed me. Went back day later with moms 78 Buick and passed. The lady tester hated that HOPPED UP CAMARO OF MINE!

 

Factory wood grain?

 

A new '59 Rambler 4 door wagon. I had been driving without a license for over a year, shagging cars for a detail shop in Denver. When the test drive was over, the examiner looked at me in a suspicious way and said "you've done this before, haven't you?".

 

Ordinary stock 56 Olds four door sedan, buy my friend Johanna took hers, in 1965, in a Franklin.
Motorcyle tests (way OT?) are more interesting to me, took mine on a Moto Guzzi V7 Sport endurance racer. The tester said we had to get into second and then stop before a white line. That racebike would go 55 in low and not pull second for a mile, and the bike's 4 leading shoe front brake didn't warm up until it had been used a lot.
I failed it and went home, took the brake apart, and gave it a super tuning. Passed the test by shifting very short and schreeeeeching to a halt with an inch to spare.
Meanwhile my ol' art professor pal Batten found his only runner was a BSA 350 racebike, bump start only and open pipe. ZB31 Gold Star.
He showed up on the line, bump started it, and the test lady clapped her hands over her ears and shouted, "YOU'RE CRAZY!! GET OUT OF HERE!"
He went back and borrowed a Honda 200cc twin. Passed.
My other runnin bud Weston took his on a RD400 with pipes. After he passed he felt boyishly exuberant and wheelied over to the office. The tester ripped up his exam paper and cussed him out. Fail.
Ah the old days...

 

A ragtop...parallel parking was easy...

 

I had three, the first was a 51 Studebaker in Downtown Memphis, next was a 56 Ford 2 Dr Mainline in Tampa Florida, Next was a 64 TR-4 in Pittsburgh. Passed all on first try!

 

1971 Impala Custom. It was a boat, but I could park it.

1963 Plymouth Valiant Signet 200. Also drove it on my wedding day. 44 years later (no I don't still have it) I do have one just like it and I still have the wife.

 

Mom & Dad's 73 nova in 1978. 2dr 6cyl 3 on the floor manual steering & brakes. I still own the car, it now has a full Art Morrison chassis, 9in ford, big block chevy, etc..

 

A 1929 Dodge coupe in 1965 I still own the coupe,

 

My mom's 1976 Pontiac LeMans. I took driver training in a 1978 Malibu 4 door. This was in 1979.

1962 Pontiac Grand Prix (first year for the GP) white with red leather interior, automatic stick in the center console right behind the tachometer.

It was my mom's daily driver!

 

I took my test in my dads 1967 BMW 1600. That was a fun little box, wish I still had one.

70 Torino. (Moms) 3months later:showing my buddy how to power slide a corner, flipped it on the roof, smashing it down to the head rest. My buddy and I were fine. The tow truck driver that showed up was one of my dads best friends. The cops gave me a reckless driving ticket and my license was suspended for 30 days. That was nothing compared to dealing with the Ol man!

 

I did it in a 1965 Lincoln Continental ... robin egg blue with dark blue leather interior. Man was that thing a land barge!
