My parents bought me that book one year. It is pact full of super good information.
I kinda think of it as the SBC Bible.

So cool that the author signed your copy. O yeah even more cool he built your engine.

    WOW:cool:

  8. growing up i knew it had been in two of the magazines, i was on the "proof is in the pudding" thread here on the hamb and zombrian posted another issue. [the power of the hamb] then last fall my cousin mark [ct1932ford] and i were at a swop meet, he picked up a magazine and opened to reveal the forth magazine.

  9. yes Dave is an amazing guy who makes everything look easy. engine building, chemistry, racing cars, writing, and his latest achievement he earned his doctorate in aeronautics.

Hell ya nice car.. great pics....

  11. thanks!
did some more work to the deck lid.
i started a few weeks ago by taking the lid off and removing the wood frame, i then heated and scraped the tar undercoating my dad put on the inside of the tin. amazing that chevy never primed or painted under the wood, in the pictures you can see BARE metal. 81 plus years! there were some pin holes that i welded up after sandblasting the inside clean. there were some previous patches in the corners, that had burned some of the rotten/dry wood and now that the wood was removed i made new corners. i then primed it with epoxy primer.
tonight i cut out the replacement piece of wood from a nice piece of ash [hard to find:D] used my band saw to cut it to shape then cleaned it up with a plane, belt sander and file. i cut the dado[?] for the middle braces and cut the rotten ends off of the side pieces. now i just have to figure out how to scarf some extensions to make the pieces meet.

  15. DSCF2648.JPG DSCF2649.JPG DSCF2651.JPG DSCF2652.JPG DSCF2653.JPG DSCF2654.JPG sunny winter day, so i decided to work in the barn instead of in the basement, wood working shop. i pulled the hydraulic cam out and installed the solid cam and lifters, i am going to put this four barrel manifold back on, just to break the motor in and do adjustments. then i will change to the dual fours.
when i took the timing cover off, Dave had used some nice new bolts to hold the front cover on, but they required a 10mm socket:(. i don't want that. my dad and uncles had built a set of wooden drawers that when they took stuff apart, back when they were building the cars, they would save the stuff in them. i saved the unit when we cleaned out grandpas garage so i dug through them and found the right bolts for the cover. not a big deal....but i think it is neat to use them seeing as though they were taken off back in the day.

  18. DSCF2662.JPG DSCF2668.JPG while the glue was drying i cut some of the corner braces, thought they would be simple triangles but the angle was offset. i realized the way they made them was to cut a long triangular piece and then cut them off at a five degree angle.
the first picture shows the first set i made that was wrong and the original to show the difference. the next picture shows the pieces i cut from a left over piece of cherry wood.

  19. DSCF2667.JPG i wanted to let the glue dry a little longer so i started to clean and polish the two four manifold.
i then trimmed off and shaped the piece i scarfed on then made the smaller piece that ran along the lower edge. screwed and glued them on.
then went back to polishing the manifold.

  20. DSCF2669.JPG DSCF2673.JPG DSCF2672.JPG DSCF2671.JPG DSCF2670.JPG a few hours later, after a family birthday dinner, i trimmed off and shaped the pieces and fitted them to the deck lid. i used files, bandsaw, belt sander, a plane and sandpaper to get it to fit tightly.

Do you think the wives and us could fit in there like the night you drove to the cruise night? (we all have gotten a little wider you know)

  29. DSCF2676.JPG DSCF2677.JPG DSCF2678.JPG i screwed the wood frame together, it had to be assembled within the sheet metal because the way the metal bends around you can't get it in when together. i did not use any glue this will be taken back apart after i fit it to the body.

  30. Dad cleaned and painted the motor and did some more polishing of the manifold. had a hard time deciding on the color. i like chevy orange....but doesn't go well with the green. black looks to new. so we decided to go red like my dad had it. after it dried we couldn't help but lay the manifold and the original valve covers back on.
