Need help in finding a way to remove the remains of a fiber type head gasket from aluminum heads. I've scraped as much as possible but whats left has become one with the head. I'm afraid more scraping is going to damage the alum. surface. Is there some thing they can be soaked in to soften? Any body got a homemade solution or ? thanks Ralphie
I use permatex gasket remover , or soak it with mineral spirits then brass wire brush it off . Do not use ClR , acids or oven cleaner it will destroy the head .
I knew someone would have the answer. Gasket remover, why didn't I think of that. Thanks stimpy. Ralphie
Please let me know how that works. I've been scratching my head on this also. Took my heads off my motor and have the residue also.
I use a finely honed wood chisel to remove pesky gasket residue. You have to be careful, though. I'd be interested in hearing how the gasket remover stuff works.
Some of you asked me to respond about my findings on the problem removing old gasket material. I tried to find the suggested 3M gasket remover but NAPA said it only works on adhesive, not the gasket. They suggested 3Ms Roloc 2" all purpose finishing disk in fine or medium. They only had med. but they worked like a charm, ate up the left on gasket and left the aluminum surface smooth as glass. So I'm not afraid to recommend them to you. Ralphie
NEVER EVER USE THOSE THINGS!!! Ask any machinist what the number one reason for resurfacing heads is...3M DISCS... Use a razor blade or 5. Use your fingers to tell if it's clean, not your eyes. Your eyes will see shadows and stains. If you can't feel it it's not there. My machinist calls them "money makers". I fired a guy first day on the job for using them...
