  5. Looks nice!

Have you thought about taking a piecut out of the top of the cowl to give it more of a roadster profile?

Help! Need 1930 chevy steering box worm shaft, rebuilt box or NOS box

I surely removed this from 1930 chevy.
    Probably it's Saginaw steering box.
    look like a 1936 1/2-1 1/2 ton steering gear..
However, NOS steering box is difficult to find here.
So I rubbed a worn gear together last year though it's not smooth .

It is smaller than Vega and 32 Ford steering box.
And my Hot Rod cannot put on a big steering box any more.
Bracket is needed to remake though model A box is similar shape and size to this.
And because headers, drag link, starter motor each clearance are so tight, I built a bracket to fit the shape of the box.

I got the advice from HAMB member.
    http://www.jalopyjournal.com/forum/showthread.php?p=9570316

My worm shaft original parts number is 261489.
And sector gear original parts number is 262946.
Worm gear 261489 was 500 dollars though sector gear was easily found in ebay.

I do not have the budget to buy worm by such a crazy price.
I am looking for worm shaft, rebuilt box or NOS box.
Does any of you have the info?

I hate to use this thread weekly but here is the latest. Cockpit has been formed with tubing and it's taking shape. Thanks again to Roadburner1 for all the fabrication skills. Oh, I just received two Brooklands windscreens to sit on top of the cowl extension. They look awesome. Gary

  15. Hey Gary,
I don't think anybody minds you posting weekly progress. I for one look forward to it! I'll be "posting" some progress on mine in a week or so...

  16. finally got my 32 as a roller this weekend. Had to dearch the springs and shorten a tad, but first time in 25 or so years it's sat on it's own tires.

    paulie31, That is very nice.

PBR, Good progress. Are they stock springs? How did you shorten them?

How can a stock knee action 1930 Chevy rear shock be a little more stiff? Do I use a certain type of fluid? What exactly was recommended by the factory? Thanks, Gary

can use motorcycle front fork fluid.

  20. They are new springs, old one's were questionable, and i'm putting some power into this car and didn't want to take any chances. I'll have to double check measurements if you want, but i believe 1 1/2" shorter and 5" or so for free height

PBR, Thanks, I'm playing with spring arch and length, and axle mount for my '26 roadster. All to do with ride and ride height.

  22. Looking forward to what you two come up with... my '27 chassis is quietly waiting it's turn on the project list :)

  24. Paulie, you might want to look into finding a later/better updraft to use... a good friend told me once that stock Chevrolet carbs were good for lawnmowers and not much else :D

A thing of beauty. Having an old Chevy is like a trip to Disneyland only instead of looking for the hidden Mickeys it is hidden Bow Ties. :D

  26. Hello,

Just got my next project 1930 Chevy.

Nice old set of doors, but I believe they are from a 26 chevy only. The 27 chevy had the same body lines as the 28 chevys, but they were about two inches taller through the window area. I hope this helps.
