    hey guys,

i seem to recall that you need to "polerize" your generator when you put it back on the car. i seem to recall that all that needed done is to arc one specific wire but i cant seem to remember which or if thats what i suposed to do

    thanx

Polarizing your charging system is pretty simple.

Get your generator in place, all wiring connected and the battery connected.

Disconnect the field (FLD) wire at from it's connection on the regulator.

Touch the field wire to the battery (BAT) wire at it's connection on the regulator for 2 seconds (it should arc a little bit).

Re-connect the field (FLD) wire to it's connection on the regulator.

    You're done.

Couldn't you just take a short piece of wire and touch it for 2 seconds between the FLD and BAT trminals on the voltage reg. That way you wouldn't have to disconnect any wires.

No, you'll let the smoke out of your regulator.

For what it's worth........... I believe that the above relates to Ford automobiles, not necessarily all makes and models with generators. Lots of info if you do a search.

Yes Fords are done differently from GMs I never tried to memorize how. I just look it up in a Motors manual each time to be sure. It's usually in the front section on generators and not in the make and model section. It has to do with how the ground is arranged.

    Funny. :D

Now that this thread has spontaneously resurrected, my comment for the newcomers is that I think 2 seconds is way overkill. A momentary flash gets the job done.

And if the smoke escapes, it's nearly impossible to put it back in.
They do sell replacement smoke but it has to be professionally installed at great expense.

Why would you change to a Alternator

  15. I agree. I just did this last weekend. A quick spark is all you need. Works fine.

For the same reason you change from regular headlights to headlights with fluid in them.

So Bandit, this is traditional smoke or new smoke made to look old? The newer (Fake Smoke) doesn't have that original patina'd look.:D

You have to get the canned smoke, it last longer in storage.

Smoke is never funny, unless it's coming of the rear tires.

I still have some NOS Lionel smoke pellets which are way better than the newer liquid smoke.

Does the procedure differ for 6v and 12v systems?

You can still buy Lucas brand smoke from any jaguar dealer, not sure it’s comparable with North American harness smoke.

  28. LMAO I wanted to say that.

I never polarize a system unless its not charging. I know that I am supposed to but I am a lazy *******.
