i am putting together a 52 flathead v8 and a 1939 trans. i have a cast iron adapter to mate the two. it bolts fine to the back of the engine, but the dowels do not line up on the adapter to the trans. when i put one dowel in its hole, the other is about an 1/8 inch out too much. are there different adapters? i had tried a spare case i had,and same thing happened. adapter and dowels look fine. no cracks, and dowels look straight. any help would be appreciated. thanks..

I've got a 49 Merc bellhousing, if that will work for you.

Are you using the removeable bellhousing / adapter from the F1 pickup? Or aftermarket?

.. Pro Race engine builders center the bellhouseing from the center of the flywheel with a Dial Indicator. To correct any variations they use ‘offset dowels’ which are available, this also is a good way to get rid of clutch chatter.

Are there dowels in the block that locate to the adapter?

That setup will work. Have that setup in my 34. What do you mean an 1/8 inch out too much?

If the half bell housing bolts to the block you may have a 6 cylinder trans case they are not the same as v8.

The '41-'48 round pattern 6 cyl. trans case is different than the V8s.

How about some photos? might help people guessing on what your working with and allow them/us to give you actual, factual information on what to do.

At the moment were all just guessing at what you need to do and what you have.

A couple of photos will help us help you.

I have a bell housing like post#6 and measured the pins center to center and little less then 12 5/16" when drilled may have been 12.300
The 6 and v8 are not the same case.
    measure the trans case.
I also think the bolt pattern is not the same.

6 cylinder hogs head is different than the V-8. Also, the Merc stamped steel hogs head won't take an 11 inch clutch where a cast truck hogs head will. Don't ask me how I know.

You guys are going to have to prove it to me. According to Vanpelts book there were only three cases 18-7006, 48-7006 then 78-7006. I've taken quite a few trucks apart with 6s and 8s and only the bellhousing to block was different. Got a part number?
