The first question the original owner of my old race car asked when I finally talked to him was "Did it still have the ClutchFlite in it."

My understanding is the weak point is not the kit, but your trans' sprag. Usually when guys broke their clutch turbo it was the sprag or clutch basket exploding.

Input shafts.. Mine twisted/broke several. 1 in. fine spline on a Fairbanks turbo unit. Tried organic discs and paddle discs.

One Sunday afternoon at Long Beach I went down there to race a clean orange 55 chevy

Both cars close in speed etc, we both left even and I went about 5 ft and bang zoom sheed all the teeth off of low gear

Dam I was bummed out as we had a good race going too, that was the only time my T-10 4 speed broke out of about 200 runs on it

D.N.D.: I hate when that happens! I've only had to redo my 1961 T-10 once in the last 40 yrs. Then again just street rippin'...not "real" dragging. Good trannies.

My super T10 is holding up well so far, but I don't have big sticky tires on the rear. I've bemoaned the lack of traction with my Hurst pie crust slicks, but the reality is my engine can easily light them up in the first three gears, and that's saving the drivetrain.

All we had was the M & H 10.00 by 16" Racemaster top fuel tires, that were made to smoke in 63' when I bought them used from Tommy Ivo after 5 runs with his fueler

My gasser could put a haze on them and saved the tranny some what

My friend has a Lyons front end on his Clutch Hydro (turbo400). It's bolted up to a twin disc clutch from McLeod and sits behind a built turbo car (about 850hp until we can get bigger injectors in it and tune for 1200hp).

He doesn't have the traction to put real shock to it, but it's held up fine when giving her hell on the roads once rolling.

I have a Clutchflite 727 that needs going through- the roller sprag in the back is the downfall of any 727-if you break a rear, or drive shaft, you just need to open the trans and make sure the sprag hasn't unseated the rollers/ramps- just put them back in place if needed. If you dont do this, then the next time you give it hell, the drum will overspeed and come apart (ugly). If you shift to second gear as soon as you start your burnout (or do the whole burnout in second) then this hardly ever is an issue.

727 is one of the easiest autos to work on, but has the sprag issue.
Turbo 400= tough as hell, plentiful, cheap.

If i wasn't a hard core Mopar guy, i'd go with a Clutchturbo400 like my friend, but I am looking forward to rebuilding this Clutchflite.

(both of our Clutch automatics use the exact same chevy input shaft). I've seen older Clutchflites have bigger inputs on some funny car stuff from back in the day. -rick

  12. Speaking of running methanol, one particular weekend, we won at San Fernando while running methanol (I still remember the square metal 5 gal. cans under the work bench). After the win,the loser comes storming over on foot, mumbling to himself about sonofabitchen, cheaters. He walks up Dick Jones brother Rod, who is holding the "oil can primer", grabs it from him, untwists the top, and as he's bitching about illegal fuel, takes a big snoot full, and fricken passes out onto his back right there in the pits!

Byron's site is a great source of info and pictures. I wish it was still an active site, and not just a memorial.

Not sure if I'm alone in this, but when I'm out working on my "gasser" I'm not trying to build a car that emulates the past, but I actually feel as though it's the 60's and I'm trying to build a car to take home that class trophy. I have looked at and read everything I can about the original cars ,but when the welding shield drops it's 1968...even though I wasn't born until 71.
My father raced gasser classes from 61 to around 65 and all the story's he has shared since I was small is what fuels my passion for racing as an adult. My favorite is the weekend "Stormin' Bull" came to Porter raceway (his home track). They thought they were pretty tough characters until they saw that big world champion sticker on the windshield.

Your not alone I feel the same way. I tell the tracks we race at, don't promote our race like it 2014 and some cars from the 60s are going to be there. Promote it like it's 1965 and the bad boys are coming to town for the Gasser wars. I'm so back in the 60s I just bought me an old 1958 bus to restore and tow the gasser with, I'm keeping the stock dash, steering wheel and guages that way it will feel right while on the road to the track.

What about air conditioning? Are you going to stay in the 1960's or 2014?

    Sounds like a fun project.

LOL! No A/C in my garage and I live in Texas. It gets dangerously hot out there, but I still prefer it over the cold. Damn, I hate the winter.

No air up front for the driver but it is going to have air in the living part, hopefully it will float a little up front. But that's only if we run the generate going down the road.

It hit -51c here this winter. That's almost -60f
That is so cold you don't want to walk the 40 feet to the garage or the truck to get to the shop.

You southern folks who have never lived up here have no idea how cold that is. We tell folks to go into a walk in freezer and close the door for 10 minutes. That's close...

On the other hand I know dangerously hot. Spent a few hours in a Grand Forks hospital this summer after 4 games of old timer / senior softball in one day at +41c (105.8f).

Only in Winnipeg does it go from -50 to +44 (110 f) between seasons

Once again... why do I choose to live here ??
Anyone have an opening for a Project Management Professional somewhere warm ???

  26. Quain, maybe Dave can bottle up some of his Winnepeg arctic air and send it down to ya, LOL... Like the 58 bus concept!

Dave, I wondered myself why you live there... and I thought SE Wisconsin was bad with -30degF to 105 DegF... You are one tough guy.

Thanks for the kind words BD about the past, as it was a Gas !! to be running a early Gasser before they all changed for the worse

One Sunday in 59' I was at the Beach and saw Jr. racing Cookie, Jr had a black 4 dr Studie and Doug in his tan 37'

Now both of those cars were real streeters with blown SBC and slicks , and that is when I wanted to build my gasser so I started in late 60'

Those cars my friends were the real deal!! and that's what's gassers were all about

Will tune into your 56' build too
