Any reason you hung the springs with the shackles on the rear?

Don't worry about your pal building a Chevy ll 'gasser'. They're all doin' it...

Because I did what I thought was the correct way based on Speedway's instructions? I never built one before, so I figure it was smarter to follow the lead of the folks who have done them before. I have seen it both ways, me and the fab guys figured it was better to do them the way the majority of the other builders seem to be going, if it is not the correct way, I don't really know which way is.

And you were right. There is no wrong or right place to put the shackles, as long as it's at the end of the springs. I've got one of each, and they drive equally well. I've seen factory setups with shackles in front, and the rear also, so even they didn't agree which end was "correct".

The way I build them is the static end of the spring is mounted the same end as the steering box or the swinging shackle is mounted opposite to the steering box mount, the spring actually gets longer as it compresses

Doesn't the spring get longer on both sides of the axle Steve? Both of my cars have the steering box in front of the axle, and shackles at the front on the Falcon, and rear on the Austin.
I would guess if it was not cross steer, then it might be different. But can't see how a cross steer axle would matter which side the shackles were on?

I see what he means- yes the spring gets longer on both sides of the axle, but since one end is stationary, the axle moves half the growth distance, while the shackle end registers the full amount of length change.

Theoretically, if the steering link is on the same end as the solid mount it would see less change; however, i believe most jeeps/trucks have the steering on the same end as the shackle, so it must be negligible- that's why i left mine front-steer, front shackle. -rick

Sorry it didn't read that clearly now I look at it, yes it grows both ways but as fury has said because of the static shackle the axle only moves half, on side steer this must have an effect of some kind, on cross steer not so much.
I hope that makes sense ?

I think at this point, I'm going to use the rear steer box as is, it will be set-up as a cross steer design and we will see how it goes from there. If everything goes as planned, I will be posting pics of the final mockup of the car on the ground on all four wheels, I hope it works out that way at least.

I went to front steer boxes on both of mine to clear the oil pans, and keep drag link angles as flat as possible. Sometimes the behind the axle position can really create interference angles that wont allow a flat drag link.

We are approaching that decision this week, so after we get everything laid out with the weight in the front end, then we can decide the proper approach for the steering box, but I do have the Vega box and pittman arm just in case.

We got the car down on the ground for final mockup, I am happy with the stance so now we will get a few critical measurements and then it's break it down and off the to the sandblaster and powder coater... Yea!!

We are going to try the stock box, it lines up right and is almost totally flat to the steering arm with no clearance issues, so we'll see how it works.

I fussed around on photoshop tonight and I think this is how the rollpan with the Datsun turn signals and the Moon Tank will end up looking.

That would work for me, in the side shot I posted, there is zero air in the rear shocks, once we air them up and raise the rear end up 2", and with the 1" drop or so in the front with the motor and trans back in, I think it will look just right for me!

The Re-construction phase is starting to go, I have my first "pile" of parts for sandblasting and paint or powdercoat. It's moving along.

Always like to see another gasser taking shape.

Your car is a real trip down memory lane.

Jimbo, I'm in the decals business as well, not like yours, but I was wondering, are your decals designed for the glass style decal or are they made of a more modern material? I am planning on getting decals for the gasser when I'm done, but I want them all to be from the late 60's to no later than 1972 or 73. I realize I may have to use replica's, but if I do, I would like them to be at least as accurate as possible, and from your website, yours look like they are accurate.

you joined in right at the first lull in the action, we are in the process of going from de-construction to re-construction. I'll post updates very soon. The new parts are coming and we are doing the final prepping to start going back together now.

    That looks pretty cool.:)

That front end will probably come down close to 3" with the weight of the motor, trans,a rad full of water, and the hood back on the car.
I think it's gonna have a pretty good looking stance there.

At the rate you're moving,we'll be able to see the finished product in a few more days!:)

Want to place a bet on that Scott?;) My experience tells me you're off by at least double what it will settle!
