A good view of the '53 Caddy engine installed. This was not a "kit car" like you see now. The kit was basically the bare body shell. Everything else had to be fabricated from scratch.

Note Brooks Stevens' "Excalibur" race car in the background. That is the number the car raced with at the Sebring endurance race. I date the photo to about March of 1955.

Fabrication was done by Ullrich Automotive in Evanston, Illinois. Hal Ullrich was a prominent race car driver of the era. Note '37 LaSalle top shift trans. It will be reused in the restoration. Original engine block is long gone unfortunately.

Chassis is a highly modified 1950 Ford "shoebox" passenger car unit. Wheelbase was shortened and the framerails were moved outboard in the middle to support the body. 1950s Jaguar XK-120 seats actually sat in-between the framerails.

Crossmembers made from 3" diameter steel tubing re-joined the sectioned chassis during the fabrication process. Car was fabricated as a race car would have been back in the day. Everything will be pretty much restored as Ullrich Automotive built it back in the day.
