In 61 we built this 53 Studebaker with the stroked 348 out of dads 60 El Camino. Last lakes meet of 61 dad upped the B modified coupe record to 154, and I made the last pass of the day at 152. First m

I recently found this old Poloroid shot of me in the Studebaker. it was taken in back of our shop the same day as the next picture. When I next sat in the car, 6 months later, all hell broke loose, and my life was forever changed.

This is the Sunday of the last lakes meet of 1961. Dad had just raised the class record for the 5th time in '61 to 154mph, and won season high point champion. The first meet in '62 would be the end of this car, and almost the end of me.

7/3/2011. Home from the hospital after finally getting the work done to repair my back from the crash 49 years ago. Don't let that happy face fool you, I'm one hurtin' SOB!!!

We went to see the car at Ak Miller's Garage the day after I got out of the hospital. Still sitting on the floor were my sneakers, having apparently been pulled off by the impact! They were new Keds. I was glad to get them back.

About 3 weeks after this picture was taken, the engine and trans was pulled, and work began on another '53 Stude coupe. The new car had a chassis set up by Frank Kurtis with a torsion bar tube axle, and 25% engine set back for the altered coupe class. The car in the background is an AC Ace roadster. It later went to Carroll Shelby, had a 289 Ford dropped in it, and became the first Cobra!

About 3 weeks after this picture was taken, the engine and trans was pulled, and work began on another '53 Stude coupe. Ak Miller's Pike's Peak winning 500" Olds powered Devin in background, and a '34 Tudor that came in needing the Olds put in running order, but money never came, so it eventually left Ak's shop as it arrived.
