    The Boy Scout troop that I belonged to as a kid used to clean the fairgrounds at the Western MD Street Rod Round-Up as a community service project. We got in free and got to see all that was happening including the jousting and burnout events. That was how I caught the custom bug! Been tinkering ever since.
