I was turned on to hotrods when I was 15 when I saw two chopped and channeled, fenderless roadsters go screaming past my house. My old man was sitting on the porch with me and when these guys went by he went ballistic. I thought that I had just seen the coolest thing that I have ever seen and I was hooked. I figured that if something like that would turn me on and piss off the old man at the same time that I had found nervana. I love all type of cars, especially race cars and rods but also sportscars. Anything that was built to go fast. I loved the early customs as well with their chopped Carson tops, twin spots and tail dragger attitude. Our first cars were all taildraggers. We tried to mimic the west coast look. My first car was a '40 Merc with a 3/4 race flatty in it and it was one of the fastest cars in our neighborhood. We always raced top end when in the early 50s. Thats when their was no traffic after nine oclock at night and we would run wide open for miles on those empty country roads. Drag Racing started in '55 at Convair airbase in Allentown Pa. They ran once a month and we were just about ready to explode waiting for "The Drags". There was a red hot street drag scene in Eastern Pa during that era and continued into the mid to late '60s while we raced on weekends at tracks like Vargo, Cecil County, Atco, Maple Grove. Island and Englishtown the street drags were wher the real heros were made. During one summer I raced at 3 tracks every weekend either with one of my cars or helping one of my buddys. Man it was fantastic. I drove gassers, super stock & fuel altereds and I was in hog heaven. On Friday night at Atco there would Fuelers, both dragsters and altereds, gas diggers, gassers of all types, super stockers along with the stockers and the place would be packed with spectators. The only guys that got paid would be the fuelcars and some of the top gas diggers and altereds. The rest of us got trophys and a no hassle evening of flatout FUN. Yahoo!!!
