Thanks for confirming that it should work. F&J in the following post has made a suggestion for something to look at.
I pulled the engine to see wtf. Looks like the clutch fingers should clear the bearing retainer. Now I'm thinking maybe not enough mechanical...

First thing I did. Can see the fingers are touching the bearing retainer.
This is an Olds 324 engine hooked to a 40's Ford era side shift 3 speed tranny. The Olds engine is adapted to the Ford with an Offenhauser adapter...

As was mentioned earlier....today you look for a spool which as far as I know doesn't exist for a banjo
