I don't ususally like to hype the magazine's I've worked on because it usually brings out the .1-percenters that would gripe at winning the lottery. But this one is really special to me because the entire issue and all the features are dedicated to this year's Ego-Rama contestants. I'm especially psyched that my picture of my good friend Rich Guasco ended up on the cover. He's been rodding and racing this car for over 50 years and this is the first time they have made the cover (except for a 1960 Hot Rod Annual). He's my hero and deserves this more than anyone I know. He layed in bed for 6weeks after his hip replacement to attend and walked for the first time the day before the event. Doctor's said he wasn't ready, he said, "Yes I am." He nearly won the whole thing- and will come back next year hopefully with his '32 Coupe, you guys need to send your votes his way on the next ballot.
Takes one to know one! Still waiting for those cookies the NEVER showed up on the Ego-Rama Might be in the mail to subscribers- I was just asking cause I hadn't heard if anyone got theirs yet.
Hay if anybody bitches about the food at my party they can.........I'm sure Subway put in alot of effort on that sandwich. Rodger
They certainly showed up at the R & C office though. Dec 3rd I believe. I guess no one shared with you?? You had FOOD at your gig??? I guess I was too busy mingling to notice.
I just got my last issue 2 weeks ago also. But it is on the newstand before I get mine too. Maybe your right Gas Stovebolt, my mailman reads it first. Thanks, for the heads up Jim, I will keep an eye out for it. CBB
Jim, you're sure right about Rich, he's one hell of a hot rodder. Getting a ride for a couple of hours in his car was one of the highlights of my trip.
Jim you are so right. Rich is a Hot-Rod-God in my book and yet he is just a down to earth fella. He truly brought heart and style to the event. He and his buddy Jim Bell were like Grumpy Old Men without the Grump - just way cool to hang out with for a week. While there were many Rich highlights for me, I think the coolest part was cruising through the NHRA museum with him. I mean the museum has Rich's pictures, his helmet, and is showing video's of his "Pure Hell" days, yet he displays no pretense. My lovely bride Judy enjoyed her little jaunt in his 29. She asked if his car was fast, and as the picture sequence below shows - he showed her. Check out her hair in the second shot. Going - going - gone! She was smiling all the way.
I'll be watching the newstands and pick up a few copies. I need to keep one pristine so it can be autographed come Autorama time.
Those are great shots Cory. Thanks for sharing, and your right, Rich and Jim added lots of fun and excitment to the "event" thats for sure.
Looks like it will be worth waiting for. Not only do I get mine after the newsstand does, I get it after everyone else who gets it after the news stand . Oh well, at least by then I've read cover to cover so my issue stays really nice. Frank
Just so ya know, I finally finished making CD's of the photos I took. Hope to have them in the mail to all the participants by this weekend. Well have to see which gets there first R&C or the CDs.
just got the last one about a week ago... funny story about your mag, Jim... We were getting ready to leave for my wife's kidney stone surgery. I grabbed the mail out of the box and R&C was in there. So, I took it with me because I knew that I would be "waiting" a lot. Well, during the surgery prep, my wife was having a hot flash- I guess you'd call it that. Anyway, I gave here the magazine to fan herself with but nicely told her not to crinkle it while fanning herself........wrong thing to tell a woman having severe kidney stone pain and about to pass out from pain and heat........ Men are stupid!
Kick ass! I was getting bored with reading the back of the shampoo bottles while pooping, this couldn't have come at a better time! Jake
YOU WHAT??? You gave HER the mag so SHE could fan HERSELF???? Your lucky your still alive, walking upright, and not sleeping in your car for the rest of your life.
I guess this is the MARCH 06 issue of ROD & Custom? Probably be here in January... I got the JANUARY 06 HOTROD on NOV 26th. FEBRUARY 06 issue of ROD & Custom on NOV 29th and the JANUARY 06 issue of STREET RODDER on DEC 12th. They all went straight to the "reading room"... Think about that when you buy old used magazines. What room were they kept in that was damp enough from the steaming shower(?) to get them that mildewed? Did the universal cookie distribution, or lack of, have any effect on the decisions of left out judges? One does wonder for at least a moment.. After all, I just did! (That was just a joke. I'm sure the "competition" was completely unbiased and unbribed.)
EXACTLY one of the reasons I DIDN'T bring cookies on the event. NO ONE can say I "bribed" the judges. That and the fact they would have been over a week old with 3,000 road miles on them by the time the mag staff got any in their bellys. I did send a HUGE box, and I mean HUGE box, to R&C headquarters, specificly the 8th floor, as a thank you for such an AWESOME time. Unfortunantly not everyone was notified the cookies were there.
Hmmmm- sounds like you sent them across town to Tim because we are on the TOP floor- and it's the 3rd. R&C 'headquarters" are in Placentia- where did you send them?
I sent them to the Wilshire Blvd address, the only address I have. I assumed you guys all worked at the same location. You know what they say about assuming........ So........why don't you pm me the "real" snail mail addy to send some treats. Shall I assume both you and Kevin work at the same location????
Oh yes, among other things he is Pure Hell Racing. Still owns that original car as well. The helmet in the cover shot is thoe original Pure Hell helmet from 1965. He returned it to the NHRA museum after the event.
