I'm a newby here. I learned about this site from JeffB. I just removed the Courier body from the frame and getting it ready for media blasting. I plan to install a '87 5.0 AOD OR a '89 5.0 HO/5 spd. I have Jamco motor mounts and what I would like to know is if any of the folks here have done an install using these mounts? Also what do I have to do about the ****** cross member and the larger crossmember to which the ebrake ***embly attaches to?

    Thanks for the help.

I tried to do a newby intro twice but for some reason the post didn't go through. To answer your question my Courier is a '54.

I'm pretty sure that 54 - 56 share the same suspensions. You never know what we can learn from each other.

    Thanks

54-56 use the same frame and suspension.

I've always liked sedan deliveries. I think the 5 litre/5-speed combo would be ideal...but then I'm a stick shift kinda guy. Please, post some photos.

Also a place to check he may have everything you need

I put a 91 302 with a tremec 5 spd in mine. I used the same motor mounts that old lady did, but I had to use spacers as the engine sat to low. I just made my own cross member once everything was installed.

Now is also the time to consider headers, oil pans, all that stuff. Certain ones fit and dont fit on these years.

This swap has been done and discussed a lot, look around a little on the main board, here are some

Now here is the straight scoop! to install a 289,302 or 5.0 in a 54-56 Ford you should use these mounts available at O'Reilly or Autozone:ANCHOR 2725(L) ANCHOR 2726(R)around $24.95 each, these are taller than the early Mustang and Ford truck mounts so you will not have to add any spacers,If you are using a C-4 or AOD all you need is an Energy Suspension transmission mount part# 4-1104G $21.95 which has 3 tapped holes for the mounting bolts to fit most Ford mountings. You DO NOT need a special crossmember with this mount. The SBF because of it's length can cause some other concerns with water pump and fan mounting, since you will be needing to change to a front sump oil pan keep this in mind pretend you have a 66-68 Mustang 289 as the aftermarket pans and dipsticks are available as well as the alternator bracket for low bucks, using the 66-69 Mustang short water pump will give you plenty of clearance(pm rustyfords aka Don for some great pics of this swap)There are now several vendors on ebay with chrome V belt pulley kits under $75, to use the early setup I recommend you change balancers to the short style these are available from Speedway in both 28oz and 50oz factors.Over the years Ford had different lengths of balancers which can make lining up pulleys a nightmare.

JeffB, are you saying that I'll have to change the alternator brkt and balancer and and hoo boy. I know I'll have to change the oil pan. I also understand that I may have to change the timing chain cover as well? I was hoping that all I have to do is to change the oil pan and drop the engine in with the existing parts. I understand that Summit/Jegs has a pully setup to replace the smog pump. But I'll concentrate on getting the ch***is done for now. Lots to do.

Well, like everything in life there is an easy way and a hard way to do things, the 5.0 uses a drivers side dipstick so to use the front sump pan you need a front mount dipstick so you can use an early timing cover that already has a dipstick hole or drill a hole in your 5.0 timing cover and plug the old dipstick hole. Also a late model cover has no provision to mount a fuel pump if you convert to a carb setup which means you have to run an electric pump.As I mentioned above there is the 5.0's length they use a long style water pump and also the longest length balancer which sticks the accessories out further so you will have to reposition the radiator forward and run an electric fan.Are you going to run carb or F.I.?

    Been there, done that

I used a summit aluminum radiator, which moved it forward enough, barely. I fought that mess for a while to figure out how to make it all work. I ended up using a mechanical fan with a 1" spacer (i think). I just didnt have room with my setup to mount a large electric fan because the fan motor sticks out to far and would hit the pulleys. They do sell some low profile ones that might fit in there.

Then there was the option to run dual electrics, but I was afraid I wouldnt get the necessary cfm's etc....So I just decided mechanical fan was fine and made it happen.

I also decided to stick with the serpentine setup since I had the pulleys for it, as well as a reverse rotation water pump. Thats all stuff you need to consider to, what style water pump, serp or v-belt, etc... If yours has the reverse rotation pump and you are going to run a serp setup, you will need a compressor on one side or power steering, or a "a/c delete" setup like I used from March (or summit), basically a idler puller. This will allow for proper belt routing.

This is the way I have all of mine setup

    Hi JeffB,

At this point what I have is a stock '87 5.0 and a '89 5.0 HO. I won 2 Painless wiring harnesses at the Goodguys show that are specifically made for a 5.0 HO M*** EFI. Painless says that I can use it for the 5.0 speed density as well. So I plan to use the EFI but as a plan B I'll convert to a carb setup.

So, The engines are stock. Both have A/C and ps and the air pump.
I'm leaning toward the regular 5.0 because I personally know it was a good running engine.I'll contact Don about his setup. Boy, I'll tell you there's so much to learn.

codyboy, since you had the good fortune to win the Painless setup I would use the EFI there is only about 10HP difference between the 5.0 and the H.O.(the H.O. uses 351 firing order) the camshaft in the H.O. comes on mid-range the standard 5.0 may have more low end, great for cruisin' I sent Don (rustyfords) a pm to post the pictures of the short water pump setup I posted above so all you members can see the difference.
