Hey we have all been there. Your buddy has a sad story and brings a car or pickup over for you to keep for a while because you are his only hope. Things get carried away and the next thing you know you are wondering if he is ever going to come back to get it. I elluded to a personal experience on another post. Let's hear your own stories of storing cars for others.

  2. I've got about 38 cars in the shop right now that aren't mine. As long as they pay monthly for having their cars warm and secure in my shop, I'm a happy camper;)

Back in the 70's I built a Deuce frame for a friend that helped me with my projects. We were both building roadsters. I built a frame jig just for his frame. He'd come over and work on it in my garage. He helped me with the dirty work on my projects so it was a fair trade off. No money for storage or labor. Then all of a sudden he quit coming around. 6 months...then a year. I never found out what happened. We were pretty close for several years then nothing.

Luckily he rented space from a community hot rod garage type thing. I loaded it up and took it over there and droped it off. He's never acknowleged to me that he got it but others have worked on it over the years and it's going on 30 years now...still in pieces

I bought my house...As part of the deal a 1964 Pickup was included. I drove said truck for about two years trouble free. Sold it back to the same guy I bought the house from and he asks if he can store it a while at my place. Sure...Two years go by...The trucks just rotting away. He has about 60 houses in my neighborhood each with a few cars stored, maybe 150-200 total cars. I just let it sit, its his to do with as he please.

About 10 years ago a guy brought over an 1880's high wheel bike, a Columbia Expert, 50" wheel. Really rather nasty, he wanted to see if I could do something to help it out. He called me twice. Never heard from him again. It's his, I'll keep it for him 'til I die, even if he doesn't show up. It's going in the rafters real soon, though. The bike is a turd, someone "fixed" it with a hot wrench, burned holes in the frame tubes when welding the seat springs to it, welded the cranks to the axle, wrong back wheel, spokes real rusty, missing parts, a wall hanger if there ever was one. I remember his first name, and what he did for a living. That's all the contact info. I have. He'll get it some day, or my kids will. At least it doesn't take up a lot of space.

I have 5 cars in my garage that don't belong to me. One is my bro's car. The others belong to a friend of mine. Everytime I ask him to get a couple out of there he tells me to be patient. Kind of pisses me off. One of my cars is out side b/c his rusty POS is in my garage. I guess I am too nice. I am giving him a removal deadline Monday. Then they get pushed outside. Moral of the story: Rent storage space, don't give it away for free.

My best friend lost his job (due to outsourcing - thanks bush!), then his house. I have three of his VW Beetle bodies & they're *full* of parts both used & new. He's moved to Oregon now (I'm in Ga.) & wants me to sell the cars (& parts) if I can. If not I'm stuck with them....

I've been there a few times. I am the type of person that gets shit done. If I have to walk around the same POS project with no new progress it pisses me off. So, in the past I just made my friends come and get them. The last time I genuinly wanted to help the guy with his project. I told him he could keep it here for as long as he wanted - as long as he worked on it. About a week later he shows up with a trailer and took it home. It is way too easy for the car owner to have a "out of site, out of mind" mentality. My advise is to collect rent or make him work on it regulary so he wont forget about it. Anybody who takes advantage of a free situation is a dickhead, unless you dont mind those kind of "friends"

My story is just the opposite. I'm lucky enough to store my '32 roadster at my buddies house for free and he drives it whenever he wants to. He also has done a lot of work on it like aluminum interior door panels and kick panels etc.I just don't have enough space. My pole barn is full. Around here I have to spend $135.00 per month for a 1 stall storage building for my '34 Vicky. Anyone with reasonable indoor storage near Troy, Michigan?

  14. Obviously that's the answer. If I got room, I store, I get to drive whenever I want to. No Driveee, No Stroreee!

I let someone store a international scout in my driveway and when it reached 2 years I told him the city was on my case and it must go and 6 months later it was till here so I gave it away,I needed the room for my toys and I never heard from him again. Jeff

Along with temp storage for customer's cars, I park a few trailers and boats in my back lot.....they come and they go...but it seems that they appreciate the service more if I charge em....only $1 per day....car, trailer or boat....$30 bucks a month...and some try real hard to not pay......I give em one month and then call the wrecking yard close by...since the first one...everyone knows that a buck a day is cheap for fenced in storage....and that I will work with ya...but Hey!...u do me wrong...u're outta here.

  18. I'm on the other end of the storage thing. had my T and caddy at a friends house, was paying him to finish up the caddy engine and help me put it back in. He agreed to let me keep my T inside while the caddy was being worked on. My dads health out of state caused me to move and my friend was suppose to finish up the caddy after I left the state, again I was paying and he agreed to let me store the T until I could come back and pick up both cars. I moved called 2 weeks later no progress. Called 2 weeks after that and was told I needed to pick up my stuff because they were cleaning up and needed the space, still no progress. I drove back 10 hours to pick up my T and caddy engine before they disappeared, had another friend offer to hold the caddy at his place until summer comes so I can come back and get it.

i really like storing stuff for friends!

    NEVER SEE A DIME.
ITS ALWAYS AT THEIR CONVIENCE WHEN VEHICLE GOES IN OR COMES OUT.
    FUK THAT!

my storage buildings are a couple miles from home,
hey, can you set everything down you are doing, shut everything off, lock everything up, drive over & meet me (wait for me) so we can jockey shit around for 1/2 an hour or more to get my car in storage?!!
THEN when i want it out ill make sure you are really busy, like just getting ready to head out of town or just getting ready to spray a car because i have the vehicle sold & i need it out "right now!" hurry hurry thanks alot!

flat tires, dead batteries, dosent run, pushes like a tank..............

FOR SOME REASON "NOBODY" WANTS THEIR CAR IN OR OUT WHEN IM NOT BUSY! ------ last year i pulled a dudes car out (it ran) after he said he wanted it out & i said lets do it now. NOPE not right now. (& he "was not" doing anything at that time!) so the next day he all of a sudden HAD TO HAVE IT OUT ASAP!
OK i got off work, zooooooomed out & pulled it out of storage, parked it in the yard with the hood up & left it running. i headed out of town. i have no idea how long it sat & ran, im sure he was sitting at home waiting for me to pick him up to go get it out too! -----------

spent 3 -4 hours out rearranging shit on a Saturday once.
the next day the weatherman says hold on here comes a nasty assed snow storm, so the dude that lives right across the street from storage buildings calls in a panic, he wants his boat in, theres a storm coming!
i said we worked out there for at least 3 fukkin hours yesterday why didnt you just stop over then? i said you lazy fukker you thought you might have to help push shit around so you sat back in your EZ chair & watched out the window. well he says i really need it in now. i have it all cleaned up & dont want snow on it! ------ sure enough i had to lay everything down, my day was packed full & i had to drive over & spend a 1/2 hour gettin his boat in for free!

fuk it im filling those buildings with MY OWN stuff there wont be enough room for someone to store one wheel much less a BIG ASSED HEAVY CAR THAT DOSENT RUN OR ROLL GOOD! :D

OH YEAH almost forgot about the 'i need the car in for just a few weeks!'
got a couple of those, one in there that was supposed to be in for a month tops. its been a year now. that 69 camaro wont & cant come out for a-long time!
it would take alllllll day to get it out --- 100 some foot long building & shes way way to the back! ---- i cant bitch about that though. ive been robbing parts off of it. got some good engine stuff i needed & didnt want to head to the junk yard! :p

    I only have one........that belongs to someone else......for 15 years....and counting....

My brother has a 66 GTO......first car...you know the deal.....has not turned a wheel under it's own power since 1976.....It has sat elsewhere for almost 15 years too...always inside....But he's going to FIX IT UP........someday..... :D

Someday had better come pretty soon..........the building ( 40x60 commercial ) is UP FOR SALE.....
It's all original and would make a sweet restored GTO....but it WILL NEVER happen......as long as my brother owns it...
