I put a new windshield in my 55 Farilane and it was the first one that I had ever installed. It was really pretty easy but you sure get nervous. Now on to the side gl***. freeman
well done , sounds like you started with the trickiest piece of gl*** first - and the most expensive ! Glad it went smoothly.
Wow! You put in a NEW windshield for your first piece of gl***. Kudos sir, Kudos. I've not done any gl*** work, but I've got a little to do, and from what I've read, the new windshields a little thinner than the old ones. Thus, more prone to cracking on install. I don't know how true that is though, doesn't matter. I'm glad nothing went south!
freemane1 , did you do the string trick or the tool from Eastwood that looks like a bent screwdriver with a ball on the end ? How many people did it take ? I will have to do my front and rear if I ever go out into th rain ! Jim
We did both the string and tool. I just had myself and a friend. I had everything ready to go so it only took about 20 minutes or so.
I have never done one but was there anything special or some trick to make it work smoothly ? Can it be installed with just the tool or does the string work better ? Thanks, Jim
We used the tool for the most part but the string works great when you are on the bottom. Also use soapy water on the seal to help it slide better. I got the door gl*** out yesterday and will be putting it back in today.
Door gl*** is easy to do . Remember to take care of the rollers while you are in there . Also good time to change the felt channel if needed . Also use soapy liquid on the bottom of the gl*** when putting the rubber on the bottom of the gl*** to push in place . I used a screw driver to open the metal up some for the gl*** to slid in . Jim
I got the door gl*** in and everything put back together. It all went pretty smooth. Now on to the quater gl***. [someday] I have both new but I am getting lazy.
i'll be replacing the windshield in my girlfriends 55 wagon this winter. i have a donor car with perfect gl*** and tried looking at videos of tips and tricks really nothing out there. how hard was it to remove the windshield trim? can you set up a camera and take your new windshield back out and then back in? (joking)..plus i fussed around with my door gl*** and even with a cut out access hole in the door i still could'nt get it out.. this is something i've never messed with. any tips and tricks on removing them?
You take the 2 side pieces of trim off first then remove the screws that is behind those. The rest of the trim comes off after the windshield is out. [top & bottom] I took my side windows out just like the book says. I did get all of mine changed that was cracked. The quarter windows are pretty easy. when you are taking out the windshield get everything unscrewed then go inside and work the rubber loose all around the window. Very gently push on the gl*** as you do it to get the seal past the seam.
i have 2 manuals and there's nothing about replacing gl***... guess it's an ebay search for me tonight..
I bought my manual at the Me*** auction but can't remember who it is put out by. I'll get out to my garage later and find out.
