COE Finally got a COE of my own

Discussion in 'Off Topic Hot Rods & Customs' started by fourspeedwagon, Nov 11, 2010.

  1. After a few years of wanting, I finally found the right deal and close enough to me to drag home in one day. I bought this 53 Chevy cabover. Even go the ***le from the ol boy. He got it in 71 and used it to haul spuds in central WA.

The idea is to mount it on a bit more modern of a frame, but I am confused as to which one. I'v read s-10, c10, dakota, astro van, full size van, step van, full frame car, stub the front with a camaro/nova, whatever front clip... I've never done a swap this big before and i'm looking for some advice from a hamber that's actually done one (or more than one) and has an opinion as to which will be the better choice. I will finish the rear with a period pickup bed so I don't need a one ton flatbed type frame.

Can't seem to get picture to load but I'm pretty sure you know what well used 53 coe looks like..

a good frame and running gear from an older motor home is the way for me to go. the steering, motor and trans are already in place. you can get one any lenth you want for around a $1000.

my2 cents- i would think it would depend on what or how you want to use your truck. your also limited on a donor frame as the width of your fender wells dictate the width of your donor. this would rule out the smaller trucks like the s-10. for a 1/2 ton you might want to look at a 72 chev, they came with disc brakes and the 80s chev van steering can be used to help with steering column angle. if you want a hauler style truck the motorhome frame is a real good idea.been there -done it

  5. The idea is to use as a cruiser/parts runner, no heavy lifting required. I want to put a long box from a pickup on it.
I know where I could get a 77 chevy 3/4 ton with a fresh 454/auto for a song, but if it won't work right I will start searching for a van.

the 3/4 ton would probably be a good candidate and very easy to swap 1/2 ton stuff over and a 454 is good hp. again the early to mid 80's van steering box would help with steering column angle.

I have a 54 Ford C600 COE. I just bought a 1987 Ford E150 van with a 302 and aod. According to the measurements I've taken so far, it's gonna work. The angle of the column can be adjusted with a Borgeson type joint. I'm going to make the rear cab mounts with air shocks. That should make for a good ride.
