Do what fits you! Airplanes sound like they fit. There is nothing wrong with a theme car. Just do it right. There will always be someone who thinks it sucks but thats with any car.

From the text; "Strips of tulipwood of uneven thickness and length were fastened to the veneer with thousands of brass rivets."
Having seen it at the Blackhawk all I can say is it's magnificent!

A very good automotive example of the airframe stressed skin was the '60's era Lotus F-1 and Indy cars. On some models they even used flat head rivets countersunk into the surface for less air drag.

This is another car from the 30s that kinda fits in with this thread. This is the 1932 Duesenberg SJ "Mudd" Coupe, bodied in leather.

That one is done in a product called"Stits Poly-Fiber",I believe.
you shrink it with an iron,(heat, that is),then paint as you like.

    No A-N 470 heads though.

I run an aircraft sheetmetal repair shop, and I gotta tell ya.. done right (to FAA specs) that would look cool.
None of the samples I've seen here have nearly the correct amount of rives or spacing.

    Somebody's gotta do one though.
Get a FAR part 43.13 1b, 2a manual from the FAA for the correct/ current rivet spacing- pitch laws.

    FYI...
AN470AD*-*... no dash, no space. Or MS20470(metal type)(diameter)-(legnth).

Here's Gerald Wingrove's 1:15 scale model of the same car. It's simply amazing, and this picture doesn't do it justice.

In his book The Compleat Car Modeler, he shows how he, his daughter, and his wife drilled thousands of tiny, tiny holes, and filled them with brass wire.

He laces his own 1:15 wheels, along with hand fabricating everything on every one of his cars.

I know you were bud. I was just clearifying incase some one wanted to order some from an aircraft supply house or the likes. Those guys can get really picky with the part numbers.

    Thats for sure.
have you ever worked with any steel rivets?
    never here.
    all aluminum.
    A's,AD's,D's,DD's,E's and lots of KE'S.

would like to try some steel ones though, other than
    MONEL.
they are too damn hard after about a 5/32 dia.
