I need a good master for my A thats available at a regular parts house. It needs to be relatively small and a single reservoir, any ideas? Oh it for drums front and back. -Jesse
I'm usin a 1983 LTD[from fullsize car] Master cylinder on my A. It is dual chamber, and a novel feature of this unit is when placed under the car on frame[facing rearwards],the line ports/outlets face the frame side instead of driveshaft side of car. 26 dollars [no core] at any parts store......
Hey Chop, did you fab up your own brackets/pedal on your brake master? I am in a fix on mine because no 'kit' will do. Thank`s
I'm almost afraid to ask?? Why a single reservoir???? What about a '61 chevy truck - dual bore - single reservoir - balance bar ready - vintage looking - only problem not cheap at napa - but always see them at swap meets cheap.
Been a while since I've posted, Anyway, I just installed a 1964 Mustang (and probably other years as well) in an A project in my Shop. Commonly known as the Fruit jar MC. Between $35 & $45. Go with a dual resivoir MC if you have the space. Mild Mitch
No one will know unless you tell them you have a dual. I bought one for an 86 Mustang SVO once. Its aluminum so its lighter. Cost only $15 at Autozone. I think most of the 80's Fords were about the same. I can't speak for other makes. Are you doing just rear drum, drum/drum, or drum/disk? Worth reading. Sure wouldn't recommend the single reservoir. http://www.jalopyjournal.com/forum/showthread.php?t=80163&highlight=dual+master+cylinder
Ford Master Cylinder, Dual Res. , Drum/Drum, w/out power brakes application. same bolt pattern as found on ch***is engineering brake set ups and other "aftermarket applications". Part Numbers: 20-1485 Car Quest 10-1485 Works great, I have one in my roadster, 12,000 miles no issues. Safety is no accident! I've always wanted to say that. Love, Cheater Carl
55-56 plymouth reservior. i used it on mine and it has more than enugh power to stop an A. its ony about 5 inches long and about 3.5 inches tall and about 3 inches wide. not sure how much it'll cost (i had mine in a closet) from a junk yard, probably not much....or you can probably get one at Kanter for an arm and a leg and maybe your soul, depending on if prices went up again....
i know it's not over the counter and not single...... but i got one from cl***ic performance, it's a 15/16" bore, small fitting (3/16" brake line screws in no adaptors needed), it has ports on both sides and is corvette style so you need res valves. $59.00 and a brand new casting. www.cl***icperform.com/Store/Master_Cylinders.htm but for fruit jars, most parts store around here don't stock them anyhow, but 64-66 chevy trucks are kinda small and 1" bore.
I would like to know some bore sizes on a few. The reason for a single is because of clearance between the fire wall and engine(actually exhaust on engine). I want it to stop good but not lockup every time I touch them either. Anyhelp on this subject would be great thanks guys. -Jesse
bore size irrelivent. Adjust the hardness/feel with the distance from the pedal pivot to the pushrod hole.
Since I'm a Ford guy, that's where most of my experience is. A Mustang master cylinder would probably be one of the easiest to find. Lots of guys have converted over to dual, so you could probably pickup a used one cheap for a core. If its all drum, no need for a prop valve. It would be worth spending some time & dime on a decent e-brake setup though.
ya it's got a good e-brake(thats the only way it stops right now). I went to Kragen yester day and priced a bunch of masters, one of the cheapest(the one I ended up buyin)was one for a full size mid '60s Chevy, cost about 28 bucks and I had an old funky toyota master I used as a core. Thanks. -Jesse
What do I have to do! I'm tellin ya man, this is the hot set up, cheap, plentiful, reliable, very easy to work with. Stop wastin your time bro, Ford Master Cylinder, Dual Res. , Drum/Drum, w/out power brakes application. same bolt pattern as found on ch***is engineering brake set ups and other "aftermarket applications". SPECS: Make: Ford Years: 1966-1972 Bore: 1" Dual Reservor Stock Application was Drum - Drum Non power Part Numbers: 20-1485 Car Quest 10-1485 NAPA Works great, I have one in my roadster, 12,000 miles no issues. Cheater Jesse rocks one in his 392 Hemi powered A coupe, loves it! Cheater Dan sports one in his 30 Roadster, great stuff. 2 other dudes in the club have them in their rides, no one has rear ended anyone yet. Help me, help you! and remember... Safety is no accident! That is fun to say. Love, Cheater Carl P.S. If you have any questions, I work at a parts store, I can give you any specs on just about any part that is out there. Why...because I care damn it!
Quit makin me all tiery eyed now Cheter Carl.......the Ford master was still a lil long and was $40 bucks so I went with the Chev one, sorry I let you down. What parts house you work for? -Jesse
The guy that says bore size doesnt matter also thinks his wife is satisfied. When I mentioned Bore size, it wasnt justthe MASTER CYLINDER! The Bore sizes of the calipers or wheel cylinders make a difference as well!
b29 chevy, From your post be sure to remind me not to have you install anything on my car (fat chance). It's quite obvious your willing to ignore basic automotive engineering and cover up ill concieved combinations with a bandaid. Frank
