What all do I need to do to change my manual car to auto on the floor... what to do with steering setup and pedals..etc
You only need the automatic pedal for the brake, when you remove the clutch pedal and brake pedals you will re***emble it using your existing parts.Save your old clutch and brake pedals to resell as some guys who like shifting will buy them to go with a T5 setup. You can remove the shift column and linkage by disconnecting it within the engine compartment also unbolt the clutch pivot & Z-bar ***embly from the frame these are also sellable parts as a '54 running a Y-block has to use a '55 Z-bar and linkage to use '55 and later dual manifolds.I like the B&M Quicksilver shifter in my '54 with 302& AOD as it pairs well with the Lokar TV cable and throttle linkage,it makes the install EZ you will also need the B&M part # 40496 which is much easier to install when the transmission is out of the car.
Pretty much but throw away NOTHING at all ! The "Z" bas is worth the most but make sure you have the ball mount off the engine side . That is what usually gets lost . Mark all the springs and bushing so you can rebuild it easily . The swing peddles are worth good money as well . Also one piece that is lost on most standard shift cars is the bottom metal cover for the bell housing . Those are very hard to find and is not remade ! Basically keep everything and put into a plastic tub with a lid . Even the flywheel , pressure plate and clutch disc as they are good for core charges . I have 2 complete standard shift change overs plus a standard column with steering box and steering wheel from a 1957 Ford . # speed trans and ever thing else . don't know what I will do with it but it's all put away . Jim
Im hoping to sell my engine and ****** out of it...so wont keep ****** parts...anything I take off and dont use I will sell...
Yeah when i finally do the swap on mine I will be selling the 223 with 3 speed too im sure somone will want it. And as soon as i get my new tires and rims in (anyday now) ill post my original rims with hubcaps on the cl***ifieds here.
If I could get someone not to be a flake and show up when they say they will to buy the engine I can make some real progress with my car...
My55Fairlane here is a link that may give you the incentive to get creative,as you know our Fords used "the deadly spear" up to 1966 and this will eliminate that and give you the column shift. www.fordfalcon2000.com click on restoration click on tilt column and read the entire text starting with "option # 4".
I dont know if I really even want tilt in the car it doesnt really matter to me...my 55 fits me perfect for almost 6ft I really just dont want the floor shift in the 55...and since putting in a 1992 AOD trans just wanting something I can put in with not much work
I am keeping my deadly spear ! I like to live on the edge but if you keep the spear and are really that nervous , just cut the spear and install a rag joint . That will break and keep you some what safer , I guess . Just remember if you get into an accident , I honestly don't think that air bagged tiny plastic , rubber parts import will have enough strength to bend the frame enough to make the steering wheel to come up at you ! Jim
Don't know about that, but a Granada/Monarch works with very few minor mods. There was a thread on this a while back. (2-3 months)
I would say no to that one or one of us would have probably done that by now . The Jeep Grand Cherokee will work with some mods but nothing way out there . Jim
bought a galaxie cruise o matic column for 35 bucks shipped so will see about that...will prob just keep manual steering since keeping stock skinny wheels and big steering wheel
Hell that was cheap enough . I have seen them go for a lot more than that ! I am sure you can make it work . You will either have to cut some off or add some but you might be lucky and be real close ! Jim
with the conversion to a 390/c6 combo in our 55 i was able to use the stock shifter on the column and one on the stock shift linkage arms for the c6. all i did is flipped it upsidown and bent the ****** end just a tad and in went right in and shifts perfectly. the best part is it still looks clean and stock and i didnt have to cut a hole in the floor. also from what i underdstand borg warner i think makes a replacement power steering box for the 55/56. there is a thread on the hamb here somewhere.
