Are there upgrades for the WC T-5 trans? My son wants to put an overdrive in his Nova. Would he be better off paying more(double) for a Keisler or similar trans? We're building a 383,400? hp.If the T-5 works good I'll put one in my rotrod.

There is a gear set replacement reputed to be stronger.
You could also go with a T-500, the 500 being ft-lbs of torque.
I think you would easily break a T5 with 400 if you weren't careful

Tremec makes a good upgrade tranny.

Never heard of a T500. There is the Tremec TKO in various strengths as well as adjustable shifter positions.

The stronger gearset will get you to about 350lb/ft of torque.

The case is why the T5 is not a very strong tranny, but it's all relative.

One upgrade I recommend to everyone is a quality shifter with adjustable shift stops. One of the big weaknesses of the T5 is the stock shifter - with no stops, it allows the shift forks to go overcenter, bend, & crack - then you're tearing up synchros & gears.

Check on some of the Mustang boards like www.corral.net - those guys run some serious power through T5s & have figured out how to make them live (for a while).

Liberty makes a gear set that is said to be able to withstand a decent amount of power, might want to check with them. I have a number for them, I'll look for it when I get home.

There are lots of upgrade parts for the WC T5s, but most T5s in hot rods are running NWC boxes. So far I haven't found any upgrade parts for NWC T5s.

they're selling a neat midshift conversion for a TEMREC trans, I'm waiting for someone with deep pockets to report on that one.....

The T500 is one of the new Tremecs and is good for 500 ft./lbs. of torque.
They also have a T600, which is suprisingly good for 600 ft./lbs. of torque.
There is also the G-force gearset which I am pretty sure if good for more than 350 ft./lbs. of torque.
Seems they don't want to really how much it is really good for.

    regards,
    Doug

  10. I'm sending Hanlon my Tremec TKO 3550 -- to convert it back from a 4-speed road race tranny to 5th with overdrive. They are cool people and build lots of Tremec stuff.

If it was me, I'd go with a TKO 3550, or if you have deep pockets, you can go to the newer TKO 500. These are fairly large transmissions, but they can take lots of torque and horsepower. Also they have multiple shift positions (even a 'front' one - that puts the shifter about where a 39 Ford box would be). Lots of aftermarket folks are using them as the basis for Cobras and other such fun --- probably a great choice for what you're doing. The prices for new ones range from about $1500 to $2000 . . . not a budget tranny by any means! (Then you need a bell housing, shifter, clutch . . . you get the point).
