Hi there folks, Me, Taildraggin and the kids are descending on the west coast about 22 May next year and leaving around the 9 June (hopefully) We are defo doing Paso but what else is going on in the area? as we would like to plan our trip round it. We want to stay on the west coast but will travel around. i.e up to San fran or down to San Diego. Not sure where we are starting or ending thinking of either flying into San Franisco and leaving from LA airport or vice versa. It all depends on whats happening where. We need to know as soon as so we can book our flights. Also what else is there to do, we done the disney thing, Big Sur, 17 mile drive. Is yosemite worth a visit? Daisyduke
from paso there's hearst castle (san simeon), morro bay, solvang, and the madonna in ain san luis obispo. the santa barbara pier and beach front are *****in'. santa monica pier and 3rd st. promenade. the venice boardwalk of course. NHRA museum, sea world, san diego wild animal park....
Go to The Blackhawk Museum in the Danville/Alamo area. That's between San Francisco and Sacramento in the next valley East of the San Francisco Bay. Go a bit North of there to Santa Rosa and visit Vern Tardel's shop and AV8-Mike Bishop if you can arrange it. If it hasn't got too hot yet, (it can go over 120º in the summer,) go to Death Valley. It's a bit North West of Las Vegas on the California/Nevada border. It's got sand dunes, a (dormant) volcanic crater, and a salt flat that's over 200 feet below sea level! Don't be put off by the name of the place....
In Bakersfield, just off of 99 there is a old hotrod cafe. Been there for ever. Of course you gotta cruize Modesto, and see the sights where American garffitti was filmed. About 40 miles outside LA, on I-15 in Yermo is Peggy Sues. Original Dinner on Route 66! http://www.peggysuesdiner.com Well thems my 3 fav joints in CA.
if you go to San Diego...get some mexican food, Valentines if your are down town, Cotijas, Santana's is usually good (especially at 0300).
I think you would enjoy the sequois over yosemite thers alot more trees there and its closer to paso +you could visit me
If you've never been to Yosemite, it's absolutely worth it. It makes you realize our little man-made machines don't amount to **** when compared to what Mama Nature can do. I'm going for new years. Just make sure you book early because it will be crowded, and I think that unless you plan to stay in the valley, they don't let you drive in anymore during the summer months.
i was just up there this weekend, it is incredible and if you are here in May you might miss all the traffic that the summer generates... i was there this summer and there are no driving restrictions in the valley, other than it is packed!
I agree... Yosemite, Hearst Castle, Peterson... In that order. After Peterson there are tons to do in LA, OC, IE. Dont forget about Ontario International Airport... Sometimes the prices are much better than LAX and it is much easier to get in and out of.... Hyfire
Dont be dumb Venice boardwalk is a joke........you wanna see good boardwalk go to the Santa Cruz beach boardwalk. It's the same one in the movie the Lost Boys and it's AMAZINGLY beautiful! Brandy oh and that hotrod cafe must be Zingo's here in Bakersfield.
If in San Diego, the Auto Museum and Airplane Museum are not far from Zoo. If you have kids, San Diego zoo one of top five in the world. Towe Museum in Sacto also has a buncha cars. Theres a Pomona swap meet and car show on june 4th. I'm sure theres a Long Beach meet near that date, possibly SCTA races at El Mirage (I havent checked the schedule).
well there's Paso, then the following weekend on the Sunday is the Antique Nationals @ Palmdale, in between weekends I'd say come to Bako for a pint or two @ Squeak Bell's shop on Thursday night, Petersen museum is good, NHRA museum is good, Venice is boring. No we are going down the boring hire car route, Got enough old tin over here without bring more back home, and a big chunk of my hotrod fund is being blown on this trip. Planning on bringing a few suitcases of bits back home though. Are you refering to Mr limey who I saw boiling over in Paso this year.

Hahaha you guys ****.......that poor little Ford was expected to do 2500 miles after sitting for 10yrs........it had its trouble but it performed well considering. You have to visit Hearst Castle especially if you are staying in Cambria again! i did it against my will but Tracy dragged me there by my ear & was completely blown away! Kev.

There's quite a few HAMBers here in San Diego, give us a call when you get in town and we can hook you up with discount p***es to the tourist attractions. There are cruise nights locally on Thurs, Friday, and Saturday...Lulabelle was out here a coupla years ago and couldn't get over all the pristine vintage tin. I guess I've been here long enough now that I have forgotten what it's like to see rust on a car...at least one that has paint on it. You really don't need to go to any special attraction or event though, just sitting on the beach near Hwy 101 and watching the sights is a treat in itself!

-Santa Crux boardwalk...Lost Boys was filmed there, and it is fun too. -Monterey Aquarium -the Nickel Arcade near my house -Pacific Coast Highway -You could get tattooed...I know someone who does them in the Bay area. Good luck with your trip, should be fun. Adam
Yes it is! http://www.beachboardwalk.com/ The Giant Dipper for the lil Nippers. The 1911 Loof Carousel.....the arcades, the ferris wheel......ALL sorts of fun things and usually during the summer there are concerts on the beach.
they also filmed Magnum Force (or one of the dirty harry flicks there) the drive up hwy 1 is well worth it...
Agreed, the Towe museum is pretty sweet, and right near old town sacremento which has some cool stuff in it. Down south near me theres always the beach and all that. Hollywood strip is fun if you enjoy seeing CRAZY people.
There is a very special place in So Cal called the Nethercutt Collection. They have a free auto museum in Sylmar, but across the street they have a museum called San Sylmar. It is a beautiful place with several collections of things. There is the largest collection of Lalique chrystal hood mascots (hood ornaments), a floor with about 15 or 20 Full cl***ics cars. The Duesenberg that cost $20,000 (circa 1034) to buy new. Pierce Arrows, all the true cl***ic marques like that. A few br*** era cars. All this is on polished Carrara marble floors with columns and velvet d****s. They have sort of hovercraft thing to move the cars in and out to protect the floor. They have a floor that has a huge collection of mechanical musical machines. There's a machine that player two fiddles with wooden hands. There is a huge pipe organ, A caliopi, a mechanical piano that plays rolls of music actually made by original composers and famous pianists of the teens to the forties. It's really WORTH traveling here for on it's own. There is a bit of expectation to dress and act respectably. But it's FREE, but by appointment only. The car museum is free too and open everyday HEY! Maybe you should pick a time and meet as a HAMB group and take the tour. If enough folks want to do it, I'll call and make the reservations. You need a group to get into San Sylmar, so we should pick a day. All I'm sure of, is that it can't be Memorial Day weekend. HAMBers are neat folks, all that I've met, and a HAMB Meet up is fun.
