New CKD...

Discussion in 'The Hokey Ass Message Board' started by fur biscuit, Nov 30, 2005.

  1. This is very true. Almost everything I want to see anymore has been posted here. It's amazing actually.

In fact some of the event coverage posted here is far better than any of the Magizine coverage anymore. And without all the adds.

ANd if you want a tech post, all you have to do is ask.

What were we talking about again:confused: :D

The magazine is what it is. I accept it as a lifestyle magazine and with that being said the only complaint I have with it is the teaser shot of the red Mercury's front (with the stacked headlights). I wanted to see more of it. I cannot expect much by way of in depth coverage of the cars as much as I would like to see, due to its chosen format.

If anyone has more pics of that Merc in question, clue me in on where I can view it. I want to see the inside, the profile, engine, and whatever other mods are done to that car.

    My thoughts:

    Magneto is so so good...

Garage is not a car magazine. It's more like a "Maxim" for greasers... Stoner is the only person I know that could pull this off. I love that magazine now. And that logo is ****in' brilliant...

I would really like to see Rolls and Pleats. I've heard really good things about it.

Rod & Kulture. These guys used to do CK Deluxe and to be honest, I was pretty indifferent about that magazine. That said, Zombie sent me the first two issues of Rod & Kulture and those guys have made some serious progress. I read the 2nd issue cover to cover and I RARELY do that. I'd love to see them go to less pages, higher quality paper, and really show off the photography through layouts in that book.

    -----

Contrary to what a lot of folks think, these little indy mags interest me a lot. TRJ is obviously the pinnacle and it's pretty much impossible for any other crew to match them because of budget and well... Steve ****an has a certain something that you can't really copy. That man is a perfectionist to a degree I've never seen.

Hop Up really amazes me. Mark produces so much with so little in regards to budget. Sure he only releases once a year, but everything in that book should be there. That's hugely important. If I was a small indy mag looking to make it big, I'd be stealing a lot ideas from these guys - solid editing/writing (an editor should be a real pain in the *** - that's his job), decent photography, and the right coverage... all in a "tactile" package - nice paper, nice size, etc...

The HAMB scoops EVERY mag in publication on a regular basis. I still buy them though. I can't help myself. Even the ones with poor journalism abilities. I'd rather look at 10 homebuilt ****boxes than one more Alloway speedster or Coast to Coast "39 Ford" built just exactly like the last one they featured...

  5. I second that......I gotta come clean, I buy 'em all. I dig cars, period and I enjoy a wide range of taste( and sometimes tasteless :D ). I dig seeing the art in the mags and they promote pinstriping. I also enjoy the layouts in many of the ads.

There's no doubt that the HAMB scoops the mags. Ah, the power of the 'Net and our merry band of intrepid reporters.

There's one thing that really bugs me and I don't mean to start a "**** storm" but, let's all get off the rockabilly bashing around here once and for all. It's too much, it's really old and smacks of intolerance when the host of this site seems to be the most tolerant here of all.

In my neck of the woods, the Rockabilly scene is pretty big and healthy. They also throw one of the biggest and best carshows here in the country. ;)

Hey, Ryan- I got an old 'Rolls and Pleats' that you can check out-PM me!

  7. You know, this last issue may be weak...but what do you expect? These guys are running two mags, trying to get this one off of the ground, and trying to please thousands of people at the same time? For every person who likes it, there is one who doesnt. you cant please everyone.

I did agree this issue wasnt tops. Wasnt stoked about the two stock trucks...but I did love the fact that Hank III is reading the issue of OSR with me on the cover and my husband pointed out that he is grabbing my breasts! Now that is high cl***! Haha.

  13. I've just read issue #4 of Rod and Kulture, and must say I liked it a lot. Much better than OSR and CKD, similar premise but less of a teenage boy thing, more adult. The writing and quality of pics is pretty good too. All the car features you could want, and the ads are near non-existant! Which brings me to R&C. God dammit! It's like the car features are only there to separate the ads. They've lost me as a reader, I counted 99 ads in R&C, only 10 in Rod and Kulture! I'm sorry, fans of R&C, that to me is just blatant commer******m, particularly as R&C is only a buck cheaper. I'll be fair about this, perhaps Jim A or someone else from R&C can enlighten me as to the need for so many ads for only a buck saving in price?

  14. You arent really that sharp are you? Try the search function for what you speak of.

As for CKD and OSR, I have an extra MLA Handbook I will ship them. Obviousley they have no clue what an MLA handbook is but most college freshman English students do...............

I saw a copy of it at hotrodch***is' shop the other day. The Sabina shots were killer, but the rest of the mag was so weak, that I am not buying. I buy all of them, but I couldn't bring myself to buy this one.

On the other hand I just got the new Rod and Kulture. Kick ***. They got it right.

I picked up the latest issue. For the past year I haven't seen a truck like mine in any magazine and in the past month it's been a cover truck in three separate magazines (including the latest issue of CKD).

As for Rolls and Pleats... I have to agree, i love those cool little zines:)
It's so good, compact and full of great event coverage!

Burn Out has great hotrod art!

Each Hotrod and Custom mag out there serves it own purpose and there's lots to choose from:) If you start comparing each one with another, you'll never be a satisfied customer... maybe some people just treat their whole life that way as well, comparing this to that... who knows?

Screw these two magazines. OSR and CKD, I have heard from a few people who forked over money for the rags on line and never got the goods.

    Screw them.

Well here's my 2 cents (with everybody that's chipped in we can buy a PBR keg or 2 ;) ).

I have not bought anything from OSR or thier version of CKD. I have bought some of The Horse because they cover any make bike as long as it's a chopper. Not like those "Harley only" mags.

Thier quality has always been ****ty, the writing is elementary school, pics look like a blind man's snapshots, and the printing looks like multi generation photo copies. So why would you think they would do a better job on the car mags?

I have all copies of HRD and CKD up to #12, and have #1 of Rod and Culture. Being broke all the time I haven't bought more of Rod and Culture, but I want them. They always learned and grew along the way. I love the progress they've made.

Most of the other scene mags are good, but I'm not for the scene. I just want cars so I don't buy them.

And about this blonde, a thong is not traditional. :p
