So I'm thinking that the last years worth of 12 volts through my original 6 volt starter has finally killed it. So my question:

Should I buy a new starter from one of the suppliers, if so where can I get a cheap one? I've ordered a ton of parts from Mac's because I get stuff next day but sometimes I think they're a bit pricey.

    or

Should I find an armature shop and have the thing rebuilt and converted to 12 volt? I think there is still one old timer doing that in my area.

Oh yeah, it's a 6 cylinder starter. Is there a difference between that and the flathead starter?

Thats a tough call. If you are running the Y-block, I would get it re-wired to 12v. But cost might be a factor also. On the other hand, how hard is it to get 6v starters and the future availability of them?

Well, Macs sells a 6v starter but I don't see a 12 volt one on their site. It's not for a Y-block. The car has the original 215 inline 6 cylinder.

Well you might want to check around your area for a rebuilder. I'm lucky to have an older fella that does them in a small shop behind his house, he lives about a mile from me.

I had my Yblock starter rebuilt including the bendix/drive, total $65.

A plus was that I got to listen to "back in the old days..." stories for an hour or so. No charge and it was probably worth about as much as it cost to do the starter.

I don't know what Mac's or some of the other places sell them for, but what I paid seemed like a bargain at the time.

That is a bargain. I would totally rather have an old guy take his time and rebuild it the right way as opposed to one that was rebuilt by a kid in a sweat shop!

I had to have mine rebuilt for my 53 six cylinder. Went through a local parts store and it cost $130, which was a lot better than the $400 that some suppliers wanted.

have you looked on Ebay , C/L ? You should also ask the guys over on Y blocks forever forum . They will know where the best deal for one will be . You can also ask (Tim) McTim64 . He runs nothing but y blocks and does most of his own work too . Great guy and is on the Y block group and the main board .

New starter thru C&G early Ford Parts with the drive is $169.95 6 or 12 volt, since some of the guys have swapped there 6's for 302's there might be a good used one you could lay hands on.

Thanks for all the info guys. I am going to see about getting it rebuilt locally today and if that doesn't work out I'll be calling one of these suppliers.

May try a local car quest, I'm not sure if they'll have it, but they had y-block starters in stock when my dad bought his, so it may be a shot in the dark, but a shot no less.
