I have thought about running the aod behind mine. Although, I'm not sure how I would get it to adapt. I know mummerts makes c4 adapters for the y block, but i would have to save my lunch money for a year in order to afford it. The t5 adapter is cheaper and I've thought about that route as well. I'm gomma stay tuned into this one to see what anyone thinks. Rocky
Click on this:http://www.ford-aod.com/ scroll down to see the Y-block to AOD kit, with the rear gears in your '54 being 3:90's the AOD would be the best bet for you.I would bet your Y-block is turning some RPM's at 75 MPH freeway speeds.
Ouch, $850 for the adaptor is equal to what I will have in the motor and AOD ******. Same price for Bendtsen adaptor. Any cheaper options for the AOD upgrade?
If you're not opposed to a stick, a t-5 will give your Y block a new life. The .63 and .68 to one gear ratios absolutely make a y-block a high-way cruiser for sure.
I was seriously considering putting an AOD in my wagon right off the get go, but being that I've already got the adapter kit from Mummert for the C4 and a C4 ready to go. I will be using it until I decide to have the machine shop build the AOD adapter.
I am mildly opposed to a stick, but, violently opposed to being poorer than I already am. Does the T5 bolt right up to the 292 Y, or am I still looking at an adapter or other costly mod?
If you like the C4 gear ratios and you are looking for an economical installation, the FMX can be adapted to a y-block bell housing (Fordomatic or Cruisomatic) by drilling two holes, using the FMX torque converter and having a converter snout bushing machined to fit into the y-block crank. Has the same basic gear ratios as the C4, but is a cast case instead of aluminum. Easy install if you already have the bell housing but is a little heavier.
Should have mentioned too, if you have a Cruise-O-Matic, the pump will interchange and you can use the CruiseO converter without having to machine the snout bushing.
you need a 150 dollar adapter from mummert, then a clutch set up if you dont have one already. it can be pricey
Nite owl, I have a FXM behind my 312 in my 54. It works great. with 325 gears in rear end. 29 inch tall tires on back car cruses at 70 and engine rpm is 2700. FMX was a easy adaption.
It seems fmx is the easiest way to go and cheapest (adaption wise). I might just go with this set up instead. I have a couple bellhousings I could use. Thanks for the info fellas, eventhough I didn't ask. Still good to learn!
