Now that we know that the Hedman 88400 will fit in '54-56 Fords with the SBF 289-302's these headers were going for $169.95 and up ,check out the price rollback at Summit http://www.summitracing.com/parts/HED-88400-RSO :D I didn't catch that RSO (right side only) so not such a good deal after all.If you put the part number in Google that $104.95 comes up,in the description it says headers(plural) then later in the print right side only.So a websearch shows amazon.com has them for $162.98 and shipping is free, the picture shown is generic not the actual header.

The Hedman Hedder part number #88400RSO is only the right side header so be carefull when you order. If you want both sides be sure to order the 88400 without the RSO after it. But they still have a good price on them for both sides.

I'd like to find one that will fit my 351W in the '54, but maybe one day I will swap out with a 302 and then I can use these.

Why won't the 88400 work on the 351W? Too close to floor because of the higher block?

I see now it is a shorty header. Guess those won't hit the floor!

I don't know, the applications tab states that they only work on the 289-302. The 351 is not in there at all so I figure there's something that is different about my 351.

54HotRod all you really need to do is swap out the 351w heads with a set of 302 heads !

So does that make it a 353?

54 Hotrod just use some 351w swap headers for a 66 Mustang. That is what I have in my 56. Retro Jim I think those vicadins are kicking in :). A 351 is taller because the block is taller. Just swapping heads won't make any difference as far as header fitment. The problem with using the incorrect header 302vs351 is due to where the collector is located. Because the 351 block is tall it makes the heads farther apart. Therefore, the 351w headers have to tuck in closer to the block more then a 302 header. If you try and use a 351 header on a 302 the collector will run right into the bellhousing. This is a case where the right header for the job is required.

    Hedman 88650

The reason these headers work in our cars is because that one tube goes up and over giving room for the steering box. This is why no late model header even comes close to fitting.

This is why I love this social group, someone will always have the answer and you don't even have to wait that long. Thanks for the link Fordsbyjay.

I have 88650 HED on the 351 in my 56, clears the steering box fine but I had to do some mods to the footwells (rear dump below floor level). Paul Selfe.

Paul do you have a picture of your headers? I will take a picture of mine today and post it up. I have a 302 with the 351 header and I had to use a spacer between the header and head to move the headers out some because of the problems I mentioned in the above post. I had everything so I just used it instead of buying 302 headers.

I'm thinking about getting the headers that Fordsbyjay suggested since they appear like something that will work with my set up.

Here are my pics of the Hedman 88650 351w headers on my 302 (with spacers). With the taller 351 I think I can see where Paul ran into some issues.

  16. I'm going to add spacers between the motor and mount to get me a little more room but do you think those headers will work? [IMG]

I have put some pictures of my 56 build in an album. The motor/frame pics were where I used a spare ch***is to set things up. I did put a slight ding in the left header next to the steering box, but it wasn't really necessary as I could stick my finger between them. Floor shots show the bulge I put in the floor pan for added clearance. Paul Selfe.
