Could anyone help with a clearance problem. Just installed a 5 litre in a 55 Ford and trying to solve the fan to rad clearance problem.

How much room do you have? I have a ton off room but I used a stewart components short pump (same as the Ford Motorsport street rod pump). You can also use a 94/95 Mustang, Thunderbird as well as Explorer front accessory setup. They are about 1.5" shorter then the standard 5.0l setup.

    Here was stock.

    Short pump with Griffin radiator.

You could also move the radiator ahead a bit as well.

This will help,http://www.jalopyjournal.com/forum/showthread.php?t=303600 scroll down to post #5 if you need any further help contact me by pm.Also if you want to retain all the serpentine junk you can use a Ford Taurus dual fan,www.fordmuscle.com has an article on this click on Tech, click on cooling and you will find the article the 5.0's long pump will end up between the two fans, and the cooling is awesome.

some people (just like the previous owner of my 54), cut the lower stone pan and move the radiator forward 2 to 3 inches, so the fan fits normally.. Personally I don't like the look of the cut up stone guard but it does the job

Jeff this was awesome information, I had to put a pusher fan in my car after changing to the 54 replica 4 core because I only have 1 1/4" between pulley and radiator.

I like my serpentine "junk" Jeff :) Well only because I already had it and didnt want to buy new junk

I have a stock reverse rotation pump from a mustang. I used a summit radiator, a derale fan and spacer and didnt have to cut anything. Probably will upgrade to elec. fans at some point

wouldnt mind the serpentine system for my car as it would be much easier than trying to chase down, find, beg borrow or steal proper pulleys, let alone brackets to install ac/alt/power steering. anybody have an approximate distance from engine block to front of accessory drive with such a system? with that measurement, i can best guess/eyeball engineer if its even worth the trouble.

how can i tell if i have a long or short water pump. please, no water pump jokes :)

  15. what motor mounts did you use? because i had clearance issues as well and even adding a short pump would'nt help me so i had to modify the car a little and bolt my rad on the front of the bracket

Rockabilly the short pump is 1 1/2" shorter. How did that not make a difference?

    Here is a summary.

Ford "Short" Water Pump (Also called the 289 water pump)
    1963 - 1969 P***enger Cars
    1963 - 1977 Pick-up Trucks
    Length: 5.42"
    Radiator Hose Outlet: P***enger Side
    Pilot: 5/8"
    Rotation: Clockwise

    Ford "Long" Water Pump
    1969+ P***enger Cars
    1977+ Pick-up Trucks
    Length: 5.70"
    Radiator Hose Outlet: Drivers Side
    Pilot: 5/8"
    Rotation: Clockwise

    Ford Serpentine Water Pump
    1986 - 1993 Serpentine Engines
    Length: 5.70"
    Radiator Hose Outlet: Drivers Side
    Pilot: 5/8"
    Rotation: Counter-Clockwise

Ford Racing Short Water Pump (M-8501-E351S)
Aftermarket Pump Designed for Custom Hot Rod Application
    Length: 4.25"
    Radiator Hose Outlet: Drivers Side
    Pilot: 3/4"
    Rotation: Clockwise

The 94-95 5.0l Mustang, the 5.0l Explorers and I believe the later T birds all used a shorter serpentine setup. It is around the same length as the Ford racing short pump above (I checked and it is 4.07"). The pump is also available from Stewart Components for less $$$. I have used several Stewart pumps and they work great.

looks like somebody chimed in enough. will give me a great start on what to look for in the local pull your part. are all serpentine sysyems clockwise or counter clock wise. will my alt/ac or power steering pump care?

rockabilly, not sure of the motor mounts as they and motor/trans already installed. drove the thing home to st louis area from east of indy with no prob. ac worked great, cooling worked great and as long as we didnt stop for lunch, it drove great. no power steering was the only complaint as it has been subframed with a fat man stub and manual mustang type r and p.

my only complaint is the armstrong steering. have found seperate components to mount stand alone (non serpentine belt) system at local you pull, but trying to do this on a budget like all. i dont want to buy stuff i dont absolutely have to buy. well, i try not to anyway.

i have less than 2 in. between fan pully bolts and radiator. closer to 1.5 in. that why i run a pusher fan. i have a two groove pulley set up that runs alt on one groove and ac on the other.

any suggestions/ideas if running alt/ac off one groove with longer belt and run pwr steering pump off the other groove would be ok?

i either buy the short/reverse flow water pump and ***ociated serpentine hardware, or get the belts/pump/brackets and a power rack.

looking over my post its sounds do-able either way, just not real budget freindly.

Here is the one I posted:http://www.jalopyjournal.com/forum/showthread.php?t=303600 scroll down to post #5 it has been posted on several Ford forums that the Ford Racing short pump and pulley set has been discontinued,if you come across one of those pumps do not buy it,without the matching pulley set it is worthless.I have also added some pictures to show the difference in clearance between late and early pumps.

dwayners why not just get a front setup off a 5.0l and switch to power steering. There is millions of them in auto wreckers around the country so I would think that would be the cheapest way to go. I had a 16" spal pusher on the front of my Griffin radiator and it has worked fine the last 5 years so a shorter setup so you can add a puller is not necessary.

As I mentioned the short pump used to be available from stewart components. The pulleys are available from cvfracing (see link in previous post).

the answer to the question "why dont i just get a complete front setup" is i dont know how far out the stick off the front of the engine. if they stick no further out than what i have now, im good to go. i dont have access to a front setup to measure from unless i go to the boneyard. i just figured someone here had done the same setup and could provide measurements. not lazy on my end, just busy usually with rental property, kids, honey do's etc. i like to get home before the sun goes down so i can relax some, and by then, all boneyards are closed. will poke around and try to find dimensions on a serpentine setup.

I dont have any words of wisdom here merely a comment on the group. I dint realize how fortunate I was to a 351W with a/c that didnt have the clearance issues you are dealing with. It I hadnt joined group I probably would have thrown lots of parts away that I would have regretted. Now I know to hold on to everything just in case.. Again guys thanks for all the info.

I checked out the link at CVF Racing and had to laugh, they must read the HAMB too the info there is almost the same as I posted two years ago.I bought a 3 row bottom March pulley from them on closeout(half what March wanted) that was on ebay 7-8 months ago at that time they did not have that info posted and their own 3 row pulley wasn't listed yet, glad to see they have stepped up to take care of us Ford guys.

No problem dwaynerz, I guess I didn't fully understand what you needed at first. I will measure my 94/59 setup and my Ford short street rod pump setup tomorrow. I will also check the depth on my daughters 93 5.0l so that should get you covered with the most common options.

thanks fordsbyjay. i will get some measurement/pics of mine here and try to get them posted. maybe with some pics you can see that i am/am not a screwed monkee in what i want to do. i have seen those electric power steering kits, but for that kind of money, i could buy a whole car.

i measured some clearances on mine last night, and i have roughly 1.25 inch between ac compressor and radiator and about an inch, maybe a hair more between double v belt pully on water pump to radiator. the header p**** has been cut to allow radiator to mount in car. still have lots of header material left if i needed to cut out more, but that looks like im getting into major tear down. maybe not major, but more than i want to do.

as far as the pics go, its no hurry as im going on vacation, and i probably wont be doing anything until fall. summer time driving season is here, power steering or not :)
