I loved this car and am building my '39 Chevy along those lines. I've searched the web but found nothing. Anybody have any info on this car?

Didn't he roll that car and rebuild it?
I loved it too, in fact it single handedly made me like 40 sedans more than coupes.

I have pics of both but no access to a scanner. They ran at Fremont in the 80's at one of Prufers nostalga drags. Both were very amazing up close and on the track. The 40 sedan really looked wild when it launched.

I think you might be refering to Fat Jack's orange 47 Ford coupe that rolled and was totalled. Buddy of mine has that on film. I remeber seeing the 40 in a magazine a few years after it was first out. The blown alloy BBC was gone and a much milder one had been installed. Don't know who's got it now.

  7. Those two cars (Fat Jacks and Morelands) really made an impression on me as aa teen. I would give them and HOTROD (when it had hotrods in it [IMG]) credit for fueling my interest in cars.

Morelands' '40 is on the street now. I just read that in one of the magazines lately. When you watched that car launch, particulary when standing behind it, you could see it grab and try to trwist the frame. The car had some serious bite. It was a wonder he didn,t pop the doors open. By the way, the car didn't roll, it was Fat Jacks coupe that went throught the lights at Fremont upside down and wadded into a ball.

  10. That was a wicked sedan, for sure... I remember seeing it at Fremont also... but the one sedan that I liked more than Moreland's was the gold '39 Chevy 4 door... anyone remember that one?? It did a NASTY left front tire lift off the line... do you guys also remember the old VW bus that had a BBC mid-engine? I believe that one ran 11's... Those were the days...

  11. Sam, I seem to remember that Gold 39 as having a BBC. And it was the family rod!? If memory serves me correct, they drove a fair ways to run it at Fremont? Cool Car

  12. And since we are rehashing some of the hot cars of the 80s, what happened to Cole Cutler after he built that red shoebox? That was a cool car as well.

  14. Oh... and the V-dub was racing none other than Steve Castelli in his HOT ROD Willys... a picture my dad took.

Here's one I took with my 110... in the 80's... I wonder if it is still around?

  15. and the last is one that I took of Fat Jack's car... after the wreck. This may be one of the only pics of it wadded up and stuffed back into the trailer...

Sam...I'm not sure if it's the same car or not but there is a gold 39 chev fordor that's from Washington State that comes here for the nostalgia drags every June and pulls the wheels every time he launches. He's running a big block and has got it into the tens.By looking at the car it looks like some kind of 70's resto rod but it really hauls ***!

  17. I read somewhere not all that long ago that the 40 was still in California and belonged to a boys home or private school or something along that line. The 39 chevy 4-door was called old gold and was out of Washington state. It was the family rod and he drove it up to the Vancouver, BC area to the big rod run one year. He also raced it at Mission raceways in BC. He ran the wheels off that thing on the street and at the strip. When it launched it used to pull one of the front wheels rite off the ground and was a rocket. Neat car.

  18. Forgot to mention, a friend of mine on the West Coast in the Vancouver, BC area is building a clone or likeness of Moreland's 40. He saw a picture of it and was hooked. He just came off the strip after about 20 years and used to build awesome rods so this should be really nice. If he has progressed much on it in the spring I will get some pics when I hit the coast in May.

The '39 chev sedan 4 door is from around the Vancouver Washington area. That car has been around for years. I have good memories of seeing that car drive around town as a young kid. It's still around and does double duty as a bracket car and street car. The coolest thing about that car is whoever the owner is ain't afraid to drive it on the street ...with the wrinkle wall slicks mounted....always ready for battle! [IMG]

I thought the Moreland 40 was in northern Indiana somewhere. Around your area.

That Moreland car was used in a 'shootout' to determine the practicality of the Pro-Street movement back in the 80s. It's "opponent" was Matt and Debbie Hay's radical Pro-Street Cutl*** Calais.

The contest involved driving a pre-determined distance on the road in hot weather conditions and then making several drag strip p***es. Journalists tagged along to doc***ent the battle.

The wicked 40 proved tricky on the road trip, running hot and exhibiting a suspension system not best suited for the street.

The Calais drove well on the open road and was reasonably comfortable to ride in.

At the track, the 40 stormed off impressive ETs and set the bar pretty high!

The Calais suffered from induction problems and backfires, and never was able to complete a full p*** down the 1320 for the test.

The conclusion was that a Pro-Street car was neither...it could be made into an effective drag car with a license plate, or a fast looking street car...but could not excell at BOTH!

That article aside, that 40 sedan was one BAD *** ride, and it...along with Jack Robinson's fat fendered Ford were two of the cars that drew me into the world of fat fendered flyers!

In all honesty, if money were no object, I'd be building my 49 Chevy in the style of Fat Jack...with a tubbed subrame, giant rear skins, full cage, stripped down interior, smooth bodywork, nice paint, lexan windows, blown 550+ cubic inch rat motor with Lenco ******, the WORKS!!

But...that'll have to wait...it's gonna go slow but FAR this first time around! [IMG]

Anyone got pics of the old Moreland 40 or Fat Jack 46 (47)??

I watched Mooreland's 40 idling through the fairgrounds in Minn/St. Paul, runn'n on the cam - nasty! right after he p***ed us he nailed it for about a second, the NSRA officials were all over him like **** to a blanket! Threatened to throw him out of the nats. It was late in the day and almost no-one around - This was not too long after seeing the car run 8's at Milan Dragway in Michigan - too cool

Jm's Forty was AWESOME!!! I saw it being built in a garage not too far from my house. I was in High School and couldn't believe my eyes. When they got it...they bought it from the orig. owner, had only 29,000 miles on it...they drove it into the garage and then tore it apart and built the ch***is and cage for it... Then to see it run at the Nostalgia Nationals...I've been a hot roddin fool ever since!

  28. I remember the gold 39 Chevy, Fat Jacks car, and Morelands 40. All three ran strong. I liked the looks of Fat Jacks car the best though. I hated that it crashed. If I remember right Cole Cutler crashed his 34 coupe at Fremont. Maybe it was his friends green 34. I don't think his shoebox was ever finished, was it? Does anyone remember the Texan? 41 Willys, with a blown Hemi. I saw it in primer at Fremont, then it was gone. What happened to it? I miss Fremont drag strip. Dean

I've been watching this post and trying to remember who was the builder of Morland's car and I think it has actually come to me! I think that the guy that did the majority of the creating and fabbing was Tom Vogele, now a VP at Primedia but back then a Tech Ed and then Ed of Street Rodder mag. The mag had lots of stories and pics of the build. He was a truly talented builder and I always wanted to see him do some other projects. I guess not to be. I hope I'm right on my guess. If not, I'm sure someone with a better memory than mine will let me know.
