This was taken about 2 weeks ago by my friend's grandson. There were several of these crazoids out there. The air temp was below freezing....but the water was slightly above.... That's Lake Superior's north shore....a few miles northeast of here.
They are surfing here on Lake Michigan all winter, ITs crazy... not quite as cold as superior but damm close!!!
Fall's when the best waves are... according to these guys: http://www.greatlakesurfing.com/ Myself, I'll settle for never knowing... Ben
Sweet! That's a nice little right there. Fun waves! Someday we will have to have a HAMB-Surf-o-rama with all the guys from the Lakes and Cali and the East Coast. Any Texas guys surf?
They are lakes and then there are Great Lakes... We don't even get surf that big in the gulf. Does the word hypothermia mean anything to them?
Step into Liquid shows the Texas boys doing some "Tanker Surfing" in the Gulf you can ride one wave for such a long time your legs would get tired...! When the Face turns "BLUE" your Surfins Thru"...!!! I surfed around some Great Lakes iceburgs with a Dry suit and the only things that were cold were my face and fingers...!!! Best thing is... "NO SHARKS"...!!!!! Quote: Originally Posted by CheaterChris They are surfing here on Lake Michigan all winter, ITs crazy... not quite as cold as superior but damm close!!! Great lakes surfing is one of the features in the film "Step Into Liquid" and after the credits of the film the Wisconsin surfers tell the camera crew to "CUT" and that's a Wrap... because it's almost 3 and that the "Packers" were playing...! (Bet they wouldn't do that now!!! ) Check out http://www.lakesurf.com/ for the latest surf conditions and bouy reports. A couple of HAMB'rs belong to the "Great Lakes Surfing ***ociation". I saw nummnuts up in Sheboygan for the "Midwest Invitational"... but there were no waves that weekend and it turned into a big beach party paddleboard drunkfest (for me !)... !!! Thanks for the Beer nummnuts...!
I watch "Step Into Liquid" everytime it's on it seems. Love that flick. I would def be up for some tanker surf- 2 mile ride! Yeehaw! (I want to go down to Costa Rica and surf with Robert August and pals- that'd be tops.) Surfed in New England many times in snow storms. Nothin' like a double-overhead Nor'easter to get the blood flowing. You know it's cold when the water is 35* and it feels warm compared to the biting *** wind blowing offshore. And one good thing for winter surf- NO CROWDS!
The great Lakes are really inland seas. THe Navy still does a ton of training up there. The weather can be some of the nastiest any sailor has ever seen. Remember the Edmund Fitzgerald?
