Hey everyone! I didn't know this subgroup was even in existence until today. Thanks Pete! I'm building a 56 Fairlane Victoria 2DHT into a straight axle g***er style car. Inspiration from a hot rod magazine feature from the early 80's called Viccup. I have collected parts for the past 3 or 4 years and plan on seriously building the car this fall with plans to finish by next spring. '58 430 mercury super marauder. Tri power long gone but I have a 6x2 Edelbrock on it right now with plans to eventually run a 8x2 Weiand Drag Star....if I can ever find one. 4 speed toploader big in and out. Polished ansen sprints 15x4 and 15x14. On thing I might have done differently had I not been so far down the 430 path would have been to use the LYB 368 and stroke and bore it to 427. Of course coming up with the bell to run a 4 spd would have been expensive and hard to find. I don't think I could live with the truck bell. I may still set the car up to use either engine. I know where one is for the mockup. The 430 uses the FE pattern and I have an ansen bell for it. I need a hood and have found a possible candidate however it is off of a 56 Mercury. Will a 56 merc hood fit a 56 ford? R
Welcome to the group ! Sounds like a really nice set up you are building . You could just make the intake with 2 round tubes welded to a head flange with a small tube to each intake valve on both sides with the carbs mounted on carb bases on the tubes . Shouldn't be too awful bad to fab one up if you can TIG weld or know someone that can . The linkage won't be to bad either since they will run in a progressive set up to save on fuel ! As for the Merc hood fitting a Ford , I don't think that one is going to come close at all . Jim
Welcome to the group. My son wants to turn my car into a g***er. Oh well. I'll be in Kentucky near the end of this month. Do you know of any cool car happenings then? Jim probably knows best about what fits on these cars. Enjoy the ride.
1956ford , I am going to be building a g***er too next year ! I have a 49 & 50 Ford tudors and one of them will be g***er . The extra Ford will be forsale !!!! I am just going to use a 1970 Ford 302 and might go with a 347 stroker . I already have a straight axel from a late 50's or early 60's Ford F1 . This axel will never bend no matter what happens to it . I got very Lucky 2 weeks ago . I picked up a big spline Toploader 4 speed trans for my g***er . Everything looks great inside except one syncro is wiped clean . I will rebuild the trans myself . BTW , I got the trans for $65 !!!!! Have fun and build the g***er with your son . It will be the best thing you ever do ! Didn't mean to steal the post for a minute ! Sorry ! Jim
Thanks for the info guys! Got a message from someone else saying they had put a 56 Ford hood on a 56 Merc same years and it is the same other than badges. Hope to find out for sure before I lay the cash down.
Definitely two different hoods. I had a 56 Mercury and it is different from my 56 crown vicky. 55 ford will work just remove front chrome trim and cut a hole for hood bird or weld up holes from 55 hood bird for a smooth look. Just my .02 cents OOPS! Oh yeah and welcome to the group.......
