Okay guys I have a question for everyone. I have searched it out but can't really find what I am looking for. Okay here it is. I have converted to 12v An I have a 5.0 HO In my victoria. I want to run the original gauges for the victoria. What do I need to do to run the factory 5 litre temp, oil pressure , Voltage. ect sending units. They are all electric like the victoria originally had.
Let's see; 6 volt gauges and 12 volt sending units= twice the resistance than needed. Your readings will be off by 50% high or low depending on how they work. The votmeter should be ok. You would first need to drop to 6 volts on all the gauges, oil, water temp, and fuel. No problem with voltage regulators(check past threads to find homemade units), however the best I could suggest would be to get 6 volt sending units to replace the current ones.
question: What about neg ground vs. pos ground? does that change under the hood only or will under the dash get changed also?
Go here and read... http://www.ford-trucks.com/article/idx/9/040/article/6_To_12_Volt_Conversion_Guide_.html This works. I'm using it and it's way better than using straight resistance.
I also have a question about the resistance between the 302 sending unit and the y block sending unit being "matched" with the guage?
1 fordfan, power flow through the gauges will remain the same, meaning the incoming power still goes to the same terminal on the gauges after the voltage regulator. As far as the y-block sending units being matched to the gauges, the units that were originally stock for the gauges in the dash should be used with no problems. As long as you have 6 volt integrity between gauges and senders all should fly right. 302 sending units are 12 volt.
all ford gauges were 6 volt they used a voltage regulator when they went to 12 volt you can use one out of any newer car or truck up to 1980??
Trimless.......................you are wrong. Ford used 12V gauges in 1956, but only that year. In 67 they went back to 6V.
