just wondering who has used one? im getting ready to install my plug wires and i need to know which wire goes where on the cap?? i know my firing order, i just need to know how to hook them to the cap so they are in the correct spot. thanks! Jason
Get cylinder 1 to top dead center on compression stroke (when it blows your thumb off the hole) and see where the rotor is pointing, That'll be #1 on the cap...then it's counter clockwise from there. I know you said you know the firing order but am including a link to good info. I have a 302 with HEI too. Did you have an issue clearing the heater ****** on the intake? Mine is kind of a ******... http://boxwrench.net/specs/ford_289_302-5.0.htm
Mention "******" and guys get excited! seriously the HEI does create a clearance problem with some intakes as the port for the heater ****** is located just left of the distributor viewing it from the front. You can go to Ace Hardware and by using a couple of fittings a pipe ****** and an "L" fitting you can gain more hose clearance,it is a little easier to install it before putting in the distributor.Edelbrock intakes are the worst for this problem,if you look at picture #1 in my Album http://www.jalopyjournal.com/forum/album.php?albumid=28172&pictureid=317741 just behind the Carb you can see the mechanical temp sender and the braided heater hose, this is one reason I don't miss the Edelbrock I had since they don't have front and rear water ports which also promotes better cylinder head cooling, this is the intake I have:http://www.kmjent.com/cart/product.php?productid=2273&cat=20164588&page=1 after 3 years it is still shiny and wipes right off.
JeffB2 nailed it. I have the Edelbrock Performer 289 with the heater hose port in the front like he said. Spent a bunch of time with the grinder and a stainless fitting I had laying around, looks like **** and I don't like it the way it is. Thanks for the info, been wanting to get that squared away before the engine goes back in.
so basically, i need to have number 1 at tdc, then the pointer in the cap needs to point at that cylinder? then i can adjust from there? just tell me if i have that right. the just follow the firing order counter clockwise around the cap when hooking up the wiring? if that is right im not to worried about getting it right. i am using a weiand action plus intake, and i have plenty of clearance around the ports. thanks for the info guys!
The rotor does not have to point at the cylinder itself. Wherever the rotor (pointer in the cap) is pointing when you reach TDC on cylinder 1 is where the plug wire for cylinder 1 will go on the distributor cap, then continue through the firing order counter-clockwise on the cap. Then you can adjust timing from there. Hope that is a little more clear...
I think I have a closeup picture in my files of the distributor cap showing the wires which have the cylinder numbers on them, you know my email if you want it.
