Hello all, I have a 53 customline with a fordomatic. It is leaking profusely from the gear selector shaft (left side of case) I cannot seem to find any type of seals for this. Does anyone know if it is a seal or just an o-ring? I'm also unsure how to remove the linkage from the case (if it can be done with out dropping the pan) any insight would really be appreciated.

Well the FoM leaker I had would only leak when the engine was turned off and sat . It must have been leaking out the front pump someplace . I had a big tray with cat litter in the tray and always carried 2 to 3 quarts of Type F trans fluid with me all the time .
I don't know of a seal but you can check in a book to see if there is one . What you might try to do is after it stop leaking , take some brake clean and clean all the trans fluid off very well and try some silicon and maybe that will slow it up some . To get that selector shaft out I think you need to pull the bottom of the trans out to get to the shaft . If you are going to go that far then you just as well have the trans rebuilt . Then for the cost of a trans rebuild you might as well consider buying a modern overdrive trans and an adapter .
Those FoM were a decent trans for the time but they loved to leak like hell !
    Just a thought .

Thanks for the response, I cleaned it down several times and never even started it and man what a mess! Do you know of anywhere I can find adapter plates? A friend of mine has a C4 he wants to give me so I'm thinking that's gonna be the way to go. Thanks again.

http://www.ford-y-block.com/index.html He has c4 adaptors, but your FOM is not abad transmission, properly rebuilt or just resealed, it's not bad. I brought one to a shop here in Ca a while back and asked them to let me know what it needed and they only resealed it that was 7 or so years ago and still no trouble. I don't hot rod race or burn-outs just drive it and still no troule or leaks. So before you throw it away, and spend lots of money (unless you have it to throw away), look at all theoptions. Good luck and the address I listed is John Mummert out of San Diego Ca and does the trans adaptor for what you are looking for. Gerry

John Mummert , Tran Dapt are a couple off hand . If you Goggle you can find some more but those are the 2 better ones to deal with .
Mummert has a very nice kit for the C4 trans !
You can also just buy the seal kits for the FoM and have them installed instead of a trans rebuild if the trans is OK . Just a thought .

Thanks for the info guys! I think I'm gonna just gonna drive it and see how ****** shifts then Make a decision. For some reason I got it in my head that they are weak transmissions so I wasn't thinking it was worth rebuilding.
