Just thought I would let everyone know that if you have a vehicle insured through one of the cl***ic car insurance companies for a low price....If you don't keep it in a locked garage....there is no insurance on it. If there is a fire, tornado, hurricane, vandalism or stolen your claim will be denied if it is not in a locked garage. I think a vehicle in a locked trailer would be denied too. I talked with Grundy about it and they said........"No Locked Garage....No Insurance coverage". Oh...you will have insurance coverage when you are driving it but not when it is parked in your yard or under a carport. Check with your insurance company!!!! I think they are all the same. My second garage is being built for vehicles I intend to flip as I write this warning. Click on crusin55 at the top of this post...check my albums and see why I'm building a garage for my babies.
Hagerty is the same way. My garage/shop is Fort Knox with security from ADT. I got a reduced policy cost by having the security. Note.... if you have windows in your shop, you may want to put bars on the inside to prevent a thief coming through the broken window. A logger friend had his shop broke into by a thief cutting through the wall with a chainsaw while he was away. No one responded to the breakin due to the fact that all his neighbors know he cuts wood and hearing a chainsaw running was common. He lost everything....... Secure your shop to the max!
I'm using Grundy. One minor mishap, s****ed the side of my car on some parts in my garage. Paid in full, my choice of body shops, no questions, no h***le.
I use Hagerty and I am happy with them so far . I haven't had to use them and hope I never will but you just never know . They won't insure unless you have a garage to keep the insured car/truck in and LOCKED UP ! It's really stupid that you have a garage and won't lock it . It's like your house but smaller ....well maybe . I always look at it this way , you lock up your house and your car , so why not lock up your garage ? I can bet you have more to get stolen than your car in there ! I always do ! Jim
I think many times when in the hunt for a nice project or something to flip we buy it, drive it home and call the insurance company and have it added to the current policy. In my experience they never ask any questions. We park it under a carport, lean-to or throw a cover over it waiting to be fixed up and turned for a profit. Forgetting that it must be stored in a locked garage. I know I'm guility from time to time!!! This post gives everyone an opportunity to think about storage before we lay down hard earned cash for that super.....super deal.$$$$$ See ya on the boulevard!!!!!
i know that has hagerty tells about keeping your car garaged before they issue insurance ,they actually made my pops take a picture of the garage that the car would be kept in and also the speedometer....dont forget that going over the mileage limit will also void your insurance, this cl***ic insurance if for the occasional drive every couple times a year, not for a daily driver...this is how they keep the cost down.
hagerty asked for neither odometer pics nor garage pics when i insured thru them. maybe it automatically triggers whe a certain dollar amount is reached or insured.
Grundy says unlimited miles as long as you have a regular insured everyday car for every driver in the household. You can use it for pleasure drives but not to run errands. I do have to keep mine in the garage but didn't have to provide proof of that.
Not everyone is fortunate enough to have an enclosed garage; anyone with a carport or other unsecurable parking facility that may not comply with terms of your insurance policy? Do what the old drill sergeants used to advise - READ and HEED. Your policy, that is. I remember when I got insurance with Grundy, they specifically asked if the car would be kept in a secured and enclosed structure. No loopholes, just straightforward information exchange. I guess what it boils down to this - and I know it's hard sometimes with all the "legaleze" included, but read the policy and know what you're paying for before it's too late.
Good question!!!! This post is accomplishing what I set out to do....get people to think. We have lots of money in our toys and it would be a shame to lose all that cash because we just got forgetful or didn't know the facts. You will have to call your insurance company and ask them. Post when you get an answer as I'm sure others would like to know who your insurance company is and what they say. See ya on the boulevard~~~~~~~Ron
Would you please explain to me why you have a building full of old car and tools and you dont lock it????? A lock costs six bucks!!!!
