Hello everyone I've not got a ford but I have a 54 mercury it has a 256- 3 on the tree in it 2 door been playing with it for years may never get it done $$$ is tight right now I've been thinking about putting a sbc auto trans. in it I have a good one the 256 is a good running motor and runs an drives great... but if it goes the $$ it would take to get it going again. you can find parts cheaper for a sbc than a 256 you know.Has anyone every done a swap like that and is it hard I've put a sbc in a 51 ford a few years ago was not to bad. I'll stop now, if I can help anyone just let me know!!!
Welcome! from Plymouth MI I just got my 54 customline and I'm the same with money! Im doing things one penny at a time LOL
Welcome! Not a fan of the chebbie into the ford products, but I understand the cash issues. All the best on your project.
Welcome, It your car if you want to go the Chevy route then go for it. I have a 54 Vicky with a 312/fmx and a 54 Mainline business coupe with a Chevy 350/700r. The Chevy was a more cost effective way to go then the 302/C4 I installed in my 55 Vicky. A lot less PITA. Just my two cents.
Welcome from Cheyenne, WY. And hey Merc, Ford its all the same. Just like Chevy, Olds, etc. All the same just different wrapping paper. Good to have you aboard!
Another welcome from So Cal. I have 2 56 Fords, one with a 302/5 speed and the other with a 350/700R4 so I say go with which ever one you want.
Crazy about a Mercury. The lady and I just drove 40 from Gatlinburg to Memphis on our vacation and what a great time we had. Beautiful part of the Country.Welcome to the HAMB from CA.
As for your "old" comment, don't know about you but as I pile on some years, my definition of old changes! Kind of like when my grandmother told me one year that they were not gonna go to start in Florida for the winter they were going straight to Texas first. I asked why and she said "too many old people in Florida!" She was 79 at the time! LOL.
welcome from illinois. when you pop the hood, its nice to see the mild surprise on folks face when they see a ford in a ford.
Welcome, and please seek out, and attend the nearest SBC detox center. I can see changing out the 256 for a 292. What parts will you really need for an engine that'll go just as far or farther than a SBC? Oil filter? FL-1, cheap. Air filter, cheap for a late model filter ***embly. Water pump every 70,000 miles? Points? Petronix. Opening the hood of your Merc and seeing a well dressed out Y-Block?...........Priceless. s
First of all, welcome to the Group, there's a bunch of great folks here, regardless of your preferences. That's just part of what makes this group what it is. And I'm not one to tell others what to do with their cars. Or how to spend their money - we have enough of that going on in D.C.... But I never could figure out why some will spend big $$$ on a resto project, only to put a Brand-X power plant in it '...because it's cheaper..." ??? If there's any logic to this, I don't see it. Well the saying goes that everybody's got one so IMO- I guess if I wanted a Chevy I'd buy a Chevy. If I wanted cheap I'd buy a Kia. Reflections: a year or so ago at a small show, I saw a dad and his young son walk up to my '56, the hood was open and Dad says "...look at that SBC...." or something like that. Then he saw "MERCURY" on the Y-block valve covers. "...I guess it's not a SBC..." Kodak moment for me, Maalox moment for Dad. I smiled but kept quiet, I think "Dad" found out how crow tasted....
