I'm having an intermittent problem with the gauges (I think) on my stock '53. The oil pressure usually registers in the low range and yesterday it went to zero after I had been driving for about a half hour. I checked the oil and there's no problem there. The temp gauge starts out cold and usually rises into the white (normal) range after driving about 2 or 3 miles, then may rise and fall to/from the next index mark depending on stop and go traffic or steady driving. It then usually falls to the upper end of the normal range. Yesterday I noticed that it stayed at the high index mark after driving (45 MPH or so) for about a half hour. The gas gauge indicates full when tank is filled but it went to zero after 20-30 miles but came back to full again after I had shut the car off for awhile. I'm thinking that the problem might be a combination of the original gauges, original wiring, and/or sending units. Any ideas? Thanks Warren
Even if it's still 6 volts check the ground wire off the tank. The sender could be shot as my second guess,if your car still has the old cloth wrapped wires under the dash they could be frayed and shorting out,my '54's wires were rotted so bad the insulation just fell off with a touch.
I am with vein . I always check the ground first unless you have an original positive ground system . It just might be time to buy a a USA made Rebal Wiring kit for way less than $180 ! USA made right here with USA made wire and components ! Can't beat the price for a top quality wiring harness and they are there anytime if you have a problem ! i bought the 9+3 kit and will be installing mine this winter . If your wiring looks like mine then it's time to upgrade and be safe ! Jim
Thanks for the comments. The car is original 6 volt flathead V8 with a relatively new battery and cables (positive ground) and voltage regulator. I think the ground is good but the original cloth wiring is frayed in places and I'm thinking of replacing with new. Is there a part number for these cars with the aftermarket wire harness suppliers? I'm also thinking about replacing the other electrical components (relays, fuse block etc.) since they're pretty worn as well. Looking at the web sites (Rebel, Painless, etc) I'm not sure what to get.
roadie,Rebel Wire is a HAMB member and offers a 10% discount to members, ask anyone who has used them about service after the sale if you have a problem just pick up the phone and ask they will be there for you.Since you are sticking with a 6 volt system I would call them first for a recommendation, the most popular swap when going 12 volt is the 9+3 kit if you might go 12 volt later it would be a good option.
I got the 9+3 kit for my 55 which I am installing a 302 and C4 . I got the extra circuits because it gives me the room for electric windows , door & trunk locks , A/C and electric fans ! If you are going to get everything that can be electric in a car then buy the 21 circuit kit . Tug will set you up . The discount basically make the kit free shipping ! They ship very fast as well !
