Dezel, yes I am retired but on a very limited income. A lot of times I have to sell something to get a part I want. The best thing I have going is my 20 acre place is paid for and my expense structure is small. I know you are still in the work force but I think most of us are basicly the same retired or working.
The best thing is to do what you want to do and if you can steal an hour or two to do it go ahead on.

Well I had a Scandia wood burning stove in the shop and it hardly put out any heat. I dug out my trusty torpedo propane thing and gathered up 25 gal propane tank and fired it off. Worked in shirt sleeves today out there. The torpedo heater is only 40K BTU on the highest setting.

Several people have told me they have barrel stoves and work great in uninsulated shops. My sides are insulated but not the roof. I ordered the Deluxe Vogelzang barrel kit and it arrived today. I am going to build it tomorrow will let you know how it works.

But in the mean time has any of you guys tried the barrel stove?

Barrel stoves work pretty good. I have one in my old shop. That building is poorly insulated and wouldn't retain heat. The barrel stove sure kept it warm as long as I kept shoving wood in it though. I can't believe I used to paint cars in there with the woodstove going....can you say BOOM???

I used to use a barrel stove in my 2 car uninsulated garage, got good and toasty. Gotta remember to line the barrel with firebrick for heat sink and keep from burning out the barrel.

OK I got the barrel stove installed. Layered the bottom with sand and put brick on the top of the sand. Loaded it up with wood and WOW does this thing put out the heat!! It was warm in there even with the big door open at 22 degrees this morning. I have left the door open today to burn all the **** paint off of the barrel as it stinks. Can't wait to shut the door and see how warm it will get.

good for you... its good to be warm. worked out of a service truck for 18 yrs.. i dis like cold. had a tin building some time back with no insulation, in the dead of winter id fire up a drip type oil burner and at times it was like being in a rain forest. but it was out of the wind and warm.

  12. Actually down here in Australia it is quite warm, so warm that I went for a walk on the beach the other day.
Just to get a break from doing bodywork on the COE.
I hope that warms you up.

    Great thread guys...

So I need some help here regarding heat...Im thinking pellet stove for three reasons:

    • My floor seeps water from the ground up after heavy rain...No vapor barrier and a poor concrete mix.
    • Fixed heating cost...pellets run out...I buy more..that way Im not gettting a huge bill at the end of the month if I use a furnace.
    • I can run the pellet stove 24/7 except stopping to clean it once a week. and the shop will stay warm all the time.
So since the pellet stove ****s inside air (damp) it should act as a drier for the floor and inside air.

My shop is 28X32 pole building only the ceiling has blanket style insulation. The walls are 12 foot.

    Any thoughts?

    Thanks for your input....

Should work fine. I have a pellet stove in my house that works good. It uses 1-2 bags of pellets per day depending on how high you crank it up. I bought it locally used for $200. Watch craigslist and your local papers.

    Hey...

Got a used pellet stove...and it seems at least for now to have solved the moisture issue and it keeps the shop at 60 degrees all the time....uses about 1.5 to 2 bags a day...I even got a deal on pellets...so Im good to go....Although a word of warning the real pellet stove piping is EXPENSIVE.....

Next garage project new roll up door seals...

I was snooping around on some of the album's you guy have posted and saw that fabmancoe has posted some pics of his commercial shop as well as his home shop. Talk about super clean wow.

I don't know if you guys know it but fabmancoe owns a large custom fabrication shop in Ohio. He does alot of one off custom fabrication for industrial company's as well as building nice flat beds for trucks and trailers.

Hes not on here alot but maybe he'll post up some pictures for us on our group??

Oh and Fabman, you said at one time you could help out those of us that have broken bolts and studs on how to get them out with minimum damage to the metal around it. How about it? Maybe in a new thread?

Steve, Nice to hear you have good heat ............. I'm still working on mine.

    Looking good!!!!
May have to stop in on the way back from the 'Bridge swapmeet to test it.

Maybe we can call it the "Pex - Preachin, and Pourin' Emporium"
