I wrestled with this on my 1941 COE build, but have decided on a 36" sleeper to extend the cab. The biggest downside to this plan is that I lose the beautiful lines of the back of the cab. I can retain all the other great lines of the truck. I really liked the "extended cab" idea as I've seen a couple on the web and really like the proportions. Have you seen any pics yet? I may have saved them off... good luck! Rick
Post a link to your pics if you can! I'm hoping to keep the proportions of the truck, hopefully 12" won't mess it up. I toyed with extending the doors 6" for easier access, but I think that would ruin the lines of the truck. I hope to get the cab into the shop soon and start cutting on it.
Found these on the web... The proportions look very nice to me, but they don't give me enough room for my required 4 full size seats, hence the sleeper idea for me. https://picasaweb.google.com/lh/photo/Y8UpwvvuThRk0FxSobCGr5jz6MGFX-CM4ZVt6So-6nI?feat=directlink https://picasaweb.google.com/lh/photo/qWovMWhwD1GE2IIX_dEVFpjz6MGFX-CM4ZVt6So-6nI?feat=directlink https://picasaweb.google.com/lh/photo/bT3RTOTwcXwMId6IU8Zj85jz6MGFX-CM4ZVt6So-6nI?feat=directlink https://picasaweb.google.com/lh/photo/ckedMRHUBCQ-byQGFWovuJjz6MGFX-CM4ZVt6So-6nI?feat=directlink Rick
Mine is extended 28 in., and I have plenty of room, but the back seat is tight http://www.jalopyjournal.com/forum/picture.php?albumid=26215&pictureid=291285
hdman, that looks really good! Mine won't have a back seat, maybe a little storage. The seats will be able to slide back for easier access.....at least that is the plan.
I put 37 inches and rear doors in my 57 chevy LCF. I have a suburban seat that will fit and have about the same leg room as the suburban.
My son and I started on the cab.....whacked off the back after making some braces. No turning back now! Will use the back section off of another cab which is in a little better shape.
scott-what do you use to do your cuts? are you going to have to widen the back to keep the sides from flattening out at the transition? i've never attempted lenghthening anything.
I used a thin 4" cut-off wheel. I'm not going to widen it since it's only 12"....trying to keep this as simple as possible or it will never get done. I'm using door skins for the "filler" panels......they have some crown, so it should look OK. I will make some small 1/4 windows also.....
I Wish I had the cojones to do something like that. Its looking good. I like how you use the 4" cut off wheel. Are you using a 4" electrical grinder or?......
What are you using for the roof section? That was the biggest hurdle I had. I used a roof off of a panel truck.
Yeah Donn, a big step to take.....I think it will work out OK though. Buggy, I have a roof skin from a '59 Chevy.....the roofs on both my cabs are hammered, so I hope to just use 1 piece instead of splicing the two.
Small update.....not much happening on the COE lately. The holidays, customer cars and other BS getting in the way. I did weld the two cab pieces together....but I have some rust repair to do on the cab corners before I start on the outer skin. I ordered new patch panels for the corners, should be here next week....
Are the COE rear cab corner patch panels the same as the ones for the pick-up trucks? Where/Who is your source? Nice work! I'll keep following your build.
The cab corners are the same as a pick up. Most mail order companys that have parts for the pick ups will have them. -Donn-
Actually, the COE cab corners on these Fords are slightly different than the regular trucks. The floors and cab mounts are different also. But since I am using the back panel from a pickup, they will work fine. I ordered the patch panels from Cl***ic Haulers
There is some 52 hood stainless up for auction on evil bay currently. Look under cab overs, buy it now $180. I was scanning this morning to see if there was any 50 Dodge stuff.
Saw that, thanks. B-Bop alerted me of it awhile back. It looks really nice, but I can't afford to blow that much on chrome right now. Nobody else is buying it either.....
It's unfortunate that the deals come along when you can't afford them. I spent $300 getting dents polished out of 60 ford 2door wagon rear quarter chrome. The guy did a fair job, they were pretty rough. Now Mac's has them reproduction for less money. Oh well.
Hey RMR&C, I hope you don't mind. I wasn't doing much today, so I came over to your shop and extended your cab. I ran out of time so I wasn't able to get it painted. You'll still need to do some tweaking and sanding. What do you think? By the way, other than the cab, I left everything else alone. HAPPY NEW YEAR !!!
AWESOME!!!! That is exactly what I had in mind! That gives me a lot of inspiration.....Thanks a bunch! Happy new year to you and everyone else!!
Bill, you amaze me Va to MT and back again in Santa Clause time !!! You have really mastered Photoshop I wish I could do that. I would bet that Scott has by now printed an enlarged picture of this and it's hanging in the shop for encouragement. -Donn-
Very cool stuff and great progress so far. You've definitely inspired me! I just bought an International Metro Walk-in Cab to build a hauler out of. I'll start a thread next...
