Hey guys, so I'm thinking of doing a swap in my 54. I was wondering what I might be able to get or what I should ask for my great running 6 cylinder with 3spd trans with OD? You can hear it run on my video towards the end. Thanks for the help! http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_K-R5k_TluQ&feature=youtube_gdata_player
I have never seen a straight 6 for sale, but I've seen Y-blocks for around $1000-$4500 depending on the quality. I know that gives you nothing of a real answer to your question but thats the best I have for you.
In NJ, a motor/trans combo(6 cyl) which is running well from that era car averages $750.00 to $1000.00. The prettier and lower miles it has, the closer to the upper end it would be. A money back guarantee would let you set your price. Remember, you can always lower your price.
I am glad you decided to keep the 54 ! That was just too nice to sell . I have heard the engine run on You Tube and sounds really good ! Problem is finding someone that wants a straight 6 cyl . They usually sell those to get a V8 like you want but just never know . If someone has one with no engine or trans then yours would be a great deal to buy . I would keep the engine in the car so someone could see how well it runs to sell it . Jim
If you don't need the cash for the new motor, I'd suggest finding a nice quiet spot in your garage for it. Seal it all up and cover it. Ya never know when it might come in handy for another project or a bargaining chip in a trade!
Or since you already have the motor and trans you could join these guys: http://www.jalopyjournal.com/forum/showthread.php?t=612160
I think 750 to 1000 is a really optimistic price. Even complete 312's are rarely going for 1,000. Try something in the range of 1/3 of that.
What are you considering for the swap? The plus in your favor is the overdrive if it's in good working order, now is you had texas rat trap's 6 that He has for sale that would be a sweet combo. http://sanantonio.craigslist.org/pts/2713689818.html
I had my 223 for sale for 6 months before I gave it away to someone willing to drive a couple states over. Good luck getting the prices mentioned above.
Please store it up on a stand or an old pallet to keep it dry. Even on a dry concrete floor, it will get moisture in it.
